A while ago there was a passing reference somewhere on this forum to a 1972 stock being converted to a Track Recording Train. Now, after the Hammersmith derailment there was much talk about the need for more than one TRT to detect minor cracks earlier. I remember an item on the local TV news about a Land Rover fitted with rail wheels that was hurriedly bought soon after for the purpose. I've heard nothing about this since - did I dream it? So, is the 1960 stock the only TRT at the moment, and is it going to be replaced?

The 1960TS Cravens TRV is indeed being replaced, by one of the three four-car 1972mkI units still available. It is currently under conversion at Northfields Depot. The Land Rover exists, too - I saw it covered in an issue of RAIL.
So far there is no informaton available on what will happen to the 1960TS TRV.

Thanks for the info.
So the Land Rover is for ultrasonic testing - does the TRT test the track in some other way?
Presumably there's a reason for replacing the 1960 stock with 72 - is the 60 considered life expired?

Presumably there's a reason for replacing the 1960 stock with 72 - is the 60 considered life expired? It could be that the track recording equipment is life-expired, or that there is too much of it and the infracos want more space in the train. Since there are no more 1973TS trailers laying around spare, it would seem that the decision was taken to convert a 1972mkI, which has the added advantage of being spares-compatible with the 1972mkII fleet, which the Cravens do not enjoy. Met Apprentice knows the most about the TRV project.

Met Apprentice knows the most about the TRV project. The 72ts will replace the Cravens unit, and will have nearly twice the kit on it, including unltrasonics. The cravens unit will most probably operate along side the 72ts until the inevitable problems are ironed out. The Cravens unit will then either be scrapped, ripped apart for spares and other train equipment for the CHT set (eg ATP Equipment) or will be given over and preserved by CHT. Nothing has been set in concreate really about what will happen to the "old" TRV, only time will tell as they say!

I always thought the ATP would be retained and used for the new TRV. No doubt CHT will be quite pleased to get a pile of Central Line ATP kit Nothing has been set in concreate really about what will happen to the "old" TRV, only time will tell as they say! Indeed. I wonder how easily the existing 1938TS trailer could be swapped between the two sets of Cravens DMs - if it can't, then it seems to me that the TRV mkI DMs will become Christmas trees...
