Today at Northwick Park a S stock set train 775 this was not in service but it has passengers and 2 large studio lights taped to the front. Does anybody know what this train might of been doing. The time was around 13:55 on Wednesday 20th.

Unsurprising. The AIT project has been under "strategic review" for at least a year now, owing to its numerous delays and spiralling costs. Other projects are looking at adding many of the functions of both the Track Recording Train and AIT to passenger stock - temporarily or permanently - as a possible alternative. Considering the AIT made its first movements back in 2010 - with the project commencing some years before that - it's clear that it is taking far too long to deliver at a reasonable price; a hang-over from Tube Lines' time as PPP contractor, no doubt... It might be something to do with this? My guess would be that they are trialling fitting lamps and recording equipment to an S stock with a view to potentially using one as a track recording train

A 7xx number indicates a special working so I expect that everyone on board was LU staff, (whether taped to the front or riding inside)! This arrangement always looked very uncomfortable for the unfortunate engineer - *in the British sense of the word - required to take readings from the front end - extremely hot and feeling rather vulnerable if the driver, whose vision is obscured even more than usual, misses a signal!

Why would LU staff be taped to the front? Surely a H & S breach

AVI train I think they call it??? Auto-visual inspection train, or AVIT. Runs regularly along the network (local stock), and performs many of the same functions as the Track Recording Train. Here's a picture of a D stock performing AVIT duties at High Street Kensington. The set up on an S stock would be similar. flic.kr/p/qrr7oF

The remaining A stock have no role relating to track recording & monitoring, and are used only for rail adhesion purposes. You'll be thinking of the 1960/73 stock Track Recording Train, which is due for withdrawal but, due to the ongoing delays to the new Asset Inspection Train (see up thread) this has been deferred.

I'm also curious about what looks like it is an old hand-held camcorder, with the large black attachment?

There is also a light, laser and a camera mounted to one of the bogies as we are reminded not to directly look at it when operating as it is very bright indeed.

The AVI run performs none of the functions available on the TRV - it is purely to capture a visual record of the railway condition. There are currently two S8 trains fitted out with the ATMS equipment for track geometry measurement, but I am unsure of whether they are operating in daily service with the equipment switched on.
It would make sense if one of those two S8's was chosen to carry the AVI equipment when required.
Regards,
Dan

I think the S8 were fitted, because that's all they had when they were tinkering. I think the plan was to roll the equipments out to all types of stock.
