A question from RMweb, where was the loco spur on the west end of Farringdon after 1956? I clearly remember the spur which usually had an 08 sitting there all day to bank trains to Snow Hill or Kings Cross, but the Harsig diagrams aren't currently available after 1956. When was the Snow Hill line closed? I remember the signals, LT owned, still being lit after the track had been lifted, possibly as late as 1971.

There was no loco spur west of Farringdon after the 1956 resignalling, the only one to remain was on the Snow Hill line. I can email you a photo of the track layout from the relevant Traffic Circular supplement from December 1956 if you want.

13/7/58 - Loco spur east of Farringdon on Holborn side out of use and replaced by new loco spur west of Farringdon on King’s Cross side. This is to permit longer freight trains via the CWL between the ER/LMR and SR. Traffic Circular 28/58.
Certainly in the early-mid 1960s there used to be a diesel shunter in the loco spur west of the station - I saw it many times.
23/3/69 - Last regular train over City Widened Lines via Snow Hill. Blackfriars Junction – Farringdon Junction closed.

Yes, I think regananorak is right. I remember the area quite well in the mid and late 60s. I think the spur was pretty much against the perimeter wall of the ruins of the ex-GN goods depot, and I seem to remember a diesel shunter and a brake van in it. Also think I went on a railtour over the line a bit later than March in 1969?

I was on a railtour over this line using a S.R.demu. I think it was 1972?. The tour was going north from Blackfriars to Farringdon and we came to a halt for several minuites on the incline looking down into a small street below.

There definitely was a loco spur on the west end. I posted the same question on the Facebook group Kings Cross Topside, and someone there said it replaced the earlier spur on the east end. I haven't yet found a track play showing it, but all this follows a lengthy thread on RMweb regarding tunnels in the Kings Cross area!
I doubt a rialtour could have used the Snow Hill line as laters 1972. when I worked on the DR during that period, the track had been lifted but the signals remained illuminated for several years after! But then I may be wrong about the track lifting. Remember the DR used to work round to Moorgate/Aldgate on Saturdays until mid 1971, and worked the Circle on Sundays, so I would have been round there fairly often.

I haven't yet found a track plan showing it, I've created a diagram showing the arrangements at Farringdon after the loco spur was moved in 1958. It can be found at: www.harsig.org/PDF/FarringdonBankingSpurRelocation.pdfPage two shows the arrangements before the loco spur was moved.

Thanks, most useful, that's what I seem to remember it was.

And accords with my memory, too. Are the lines marked above "Holborn Low Level" catch points?

ISTR they were to one of the underground goods depots which abounded in that area. Catch points would not normally divert errant trains across an opposite running line, and are not provided in the facing direction.!
