Hi All, Does anyone now what fluid was used in the R49 speedo and what colour it was. Was it water or oil and did it have any dye added to it to make it more visible. Cheers Darren.

I don't exactly know what the fluid was but it most definitely was green in colour. An adjuster on the side increased or decreased the intensity of the light shining on it.
As a joke, myself and a few of my colleagues referred to them as "green fairy liquid warp speed indicators!" - the consistency of the fluid resembling said cleaning product!
I remember on the R Stock Tour day, 15 May 1983, I was positioned in the rear cab on the run down the Fast from Harrow to Baker Street, Unfortunately that 'speedo' was slightly damaged at the top and so at an estimated speed of 55+, this green liquid started to ooze and then gush forth from the top of the indicator like a volcano! A highly comical moment on an excellent day.
