Yeah, did that from the setup menu earlier, boots from E: (CD-ROM) first, then A: (Floppy), then finally C:. That should work OK...?

Any combo as long as the cd drive is first. I think the best option for you will be to re-install win 2K because you know that that works with the computer.

Ok, its just that windows XP can be quite picky about what computer its on (It will only let you install it if your pc meets the minimum system requirements) Sorry Tom, but I'm going to disagree with you there. Microsoft states XP requires a 233MHz CPU, 128Mb RAM. I've installed it on an original Pentium-120 with 32Mb RAM. It was utterly useless, but it ran, nonetheless. As for the original problem, if Jim can get a hold of a windows 2000 CD, then he can boot from it as if he were starting setup, then choose the recovery console and restore the missing file from the 2000 CD. It's not a user-friendly process, but it's certainly a lot less hassle than having to reinstall.

As a slight off-thread what do you lads think of the new name for the upcoming version of the O/S? I thought "Bighorn" was bad enough but "Vista" is worse!!

Apart from the genera; rubbishness of "Vista", it seems that there could be plenty of issues with regards to trademarks etc. For example www.vistawindows.com.au is a company making real glass windows. It's also beginning to sound like MS are getting really annoyed by the time the new version is taking to develop, and may have decided to release something that is effectively a tarted up version of xp, with an over the top user interface which will eat any computer without a reasonably high end graphics card. Then you'll get the new filing system when they manage to finish it etc.

Antharro - I know from experience that it will run on a pc with that spec, but i'm not sure of the pc in questions spec and also he only has a 2GB hard drive.
As for win 2k recovery mode, if its not user friendly then I still recommend a re-install.

Back to the topic - Windows Vista
Microsoft like to make an operating system then discover the problems when users report them, so technically when the operating system first comes out its just a bug ridden mess!
Also, its still in the beta stages so it'll be a long time before we get the full version.

Well I hope that when the "vista" opens it's got rid of that infuriating habit of having to re-boot everytime you install something/

As for win 2k recovery mode, if its not user friendly then I still recommend a re-install. Perhaps. But there can be all sorts of issues with reinstalling over the top of an existing install. 2k and XP are both known for erasing existing user profiles under certain circumstances. Maybe the best course of action for Jim would be to boot from a Windows 2000 CD and run a "repair" install instead of a re-install. I've done a number of these on damaged installs, and touch wood, every one has been successful. If Jim boots from the Windows 2000 CD, part of the setup process is to search for existing Windows installs. It should detect his existing installation of Windows and offer to repair it. Once the repair installation has completed, best to download the latest Service Pack from Microsoft and install that. Or even better, run Windows Update and download the Service Pack and other updates from there. But at least, get the latest Service Pack on.

Jim - be VERY careful buying Windows from eBay - there's a LOT of pirated / not legit software up there. If you're after a Windows 2000 licence sticker and CD, send me a PM.
