Two hard drives, both 2Gb... There won't be much left after XP has got it's share of those.

I didn't go loopy on it, maybe about 30 files or so, although most of these were easily identifiable as non-system files. The PC is a little aged, hence the fact that it's only got 2Gb on each hard-drive. Maybe bearing that in mind I'd be better off trying to repair the 2000NT version that's on there already?? Or is it time to ditch the ol' girl and buy a new one!!

The question most people forget to ask at this point is: Are you happy with the performance etc of the current computer, and do you really need the computer that the fool in PC World will attempt to sell you? (Anyone buying a computer system there should be shot as they leave the shop.)
If it still works (and it sounds like you have another computer for complicated stuff anyway), then there is no need to rush out and get a new one.

I've got a work laptop that I'm using now, complete with a VPN connection so the speed's fine but at the end of the day it's a work, not play laptop and all internet use etc is monitored so not ideal. My flatmates also use the PC we have at home so preferably it'd be best to fix the old beast in the corner. We've all got our banking etc etc set up on it, and it's got a 2mbps broadband connection on it aswell (although I suspect the processor within doesn't make the most of the connection speed... having said that it's not the slowest machine in the world and has served us well for years now. Bearing that in mind, the best solution would be (if possible) to repair it...

I suppose a hard drive with more capacity would be an option if you were to keep the current computer. But that would mean getting somebody to fit it and also having to pay more for a full copy of XP.

Remember that MS didn't start using product activation until Windows and Office XP, so if you can get a Win 2K CD (with the correct key) off anyone that should be enough to fix things.

Yeh, that is a good very low cost option

Where would be the best place to find a copy do you reckon?

So all I would need is the CD-ROM with an original version of 2000 on, and the key (that's the xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx code yeah?). I'm sure I can find a mate with a copy... if not can I still buy it or is this version too outdated?

How about downloading the missing file(s) off the Microsoft support website? Or are they all specific to the machine?

I dont think that microsoft will supply all of the missing files on their site. Also, how will you put them back in if you cant get access to the system.

True, true. I'll see if I can get my hands on an original copy from elsewhere then. So, one final question: if I can't get a copy of 2000, is it worth trying to put XP on this machine with only 2x2Gb hard drives? Or time to upgrade either the hard drives, or the entire machine?
Thanks chaps, you've been a tremendous help.

Its not even worth trying to put XP on 1 of the hard drives. You would have to upgrade one of them. Also older computers sometimes dont accept XP.

Also, is all your documents and stuff on one of these 2 GB hard drives and win 2K on the other?

OK cool. Is it worth giving plan A a whirl (compsci getting a copy of the missing file on Monday), just to see if it works then? My last chance of getting her up and running again eh

Yeah, Win2k's on the C drive and most of the other stuff is on the D drive...

Give plan A a go, but if more files are missing and you cant get access to the system you will need a win 2k disk to re install

Ok, its just that windows XP can be quite picky about what computer its on (It will only let you install it if your pc meets the minimum system requirements)

In the end if the file replacement option doesnt work then you will either have to obtain and install a win 2k disk again or buy xp and upgrade the win 2k hard drive.

Looks like I need to go in search of a copy of the original 2000NT software then... thanks for all your help chaps, much appreciated. I'm thinking of banning computer useage after a trip to the pub, expecially after last night's events

I think so, should be able to work it out from the on-screen prompts when I run the CDROM? Or is it more complicated than that?
