An interesting journey into town for me this evening.
We'd just pulled out of Leyton westbound and were descending towards the tunnel mouths, when the brakes came on quite hard. It actually took us a while to stop - it is a relatively steep downhill gradient there, of course - but the braking felt quite heavy and we stopped with a reasonable jolt - there was no easing off. I reckon we stopped just outside the pipe. We had a brief wait and then it felt as if the brakes released and then came back on again right away.
After this, I became aware that we were moving, but we seemed to be rolling down the hill. We were travelling very slowly and I had felt no acceleration. I only noticed we were moving because I saw a street light go slowly by. We did, however, enter the pipe and had soon built up some speed - it didn't feel like RM, it seemed like we were travelling faster and we didn't have the on-off, on-off, on-off from the motors.
Soon, the T/Op came over the PA apologising for the stop and the present low speed. She explained that there was a minor defect in the cab and that she should be able to fix it at the next station.
Then we started slowing down, very gradually, nice and gentle, like. Then, bizarrely, the train came to a very messy stop. It seemed to lurch. It felt as if we'd momentarily accelerated, as my body was pulled briefly to the right and then we stopped with a jolt and a half.
When we got going again I'm pretty confident we were in RM. Very slow and we had the motors dropping out and then coming back in again, before dropping out. Uphill into Stratford, of course. Once we'd got moving, the T/Op again apologised for the two stops and the low speed, said she was confident that we wouldn't have to stop again and reiterated that there was a minor problem in the cab and that it would likely be fixed when we arrived at Stratford.
It was indeed fixed when we arrived at Stratford, although I'd be curious to know what exactly the problem was, if it rings a bell with anyone. There was a time when a considerable whirring noise could be heard.
If it helps, it was train 015 and I reckon it happened around 17:00.
