Ive done a quick search through the threads on the Metadyne machines and thought I might include some more information on them. This is the artical from "The New Electrical Encyclopaedia - Vol. 3" circa. 1958, a set of books which I have spent hours pouring over in fascination!
METADYNE
A special type of DC machine with one pair of short circuited brushes, in which special use is made of armature reaction, or cross flux, to control the machine characteristic.
Metadynes may be built to act as motors, generators, or transformers of DC power. An Amplidyne is equivilant to a fully compensated Metadyne Generator.
Metadyne Transformer
The original type of Metadyne Machine, so called because both power input and output are electrical. It is really a DC transformer with a continuously variable transformation ratio. It has been applied to train control where it is arranged to convert power from constant voltage to a variable voltage to give any desired speed/torque characteristic to the traction motors, from standstill to full speed. This control is inherent in the Metadyne, which automatically gives a variable boost to the back EMF of the traction motors to balance line volts and overcome the I^2R losses of the machine. The metadyne transformer thus eliminates the need for starting resistances, accellerating relays, switches, cam groups, etc., and provides a means of regenerative control of the machine to standstill.
Metadyne Generator
A special type of machine in which the input is mechanical and the output is electrical. It is being increasingly applied to various forms of industrial control, perticularly of Servo-mechanisms, where the high sensitivity and quick response are required. During the 39-45 war Metadyne generators were developed as a source of power for servo mechanisms for gun and radar control. Additional appliocations are constant control of current, voltage, torque, speed, tension; automatic control of power factor, stability, and arc furnaces.
(The artical continues but I would need to draw the diagrams or scan them because without them it doesnt make much sense!)
