Ah cross purposes here BF, he didn't regard the initial nomenclature as demeaning at all. He just thought it was pointless creating a description for "someone who sweeps roads that doesn't mention sweeping roads". On my previous address's local council, sanitary inspectors were called "Public health officers" Some councils employ "Midday Meals Supervisory Assistant Supervisors" - i.e. the head dinnerlady. I know of one organisation where the grades "Cleaner, woman" and "Cleaner, male" existed until the late 80s, although a woman could apply to the male cleaners grade (the difference being the latter was better paid, but included higher-skilled tasks).

"Oh, the photocopier is broken - we need an engineer."
No, you need a repair man!

Thanks. Do we have any female depot shunters yet? None at Old Oak where I'm a Shunter but I'd have thought there would be at least 1 somewhere!
