At some stations one can still see the old mailboxes used for staff correspondence, now blocked off and unused. What types of correspondence did they carry, and whose responsibility was it to go around and empty them for delivery?

At a guess, they would have been used for general notices for the Station Manager... I would also like to ask a question, [thanks to TOK for the spur-on] when do people tink they were last used? certainly I remember seeing the one at Charing X Northern Line blanked off in 1992...

Does this correspond/correlate with the Metromail service - someone will travel in the 4th car of the train?

I've been on LU since 1983 and have never seen them used except as rubbish bins as they were not blocked off until the late 1990s.

Which is probably why they were closed up, due to misuse... I bet some people put their hands inside to see if they could get anything...

Anybody putting their hands in one of them would have got a nasty shock, I saw a passenger pi$$ing in one of them at Bond Street once

I'd hate to be the person emptying them...

The Metromail service was only on the Met IIRC, this was a member of staff (glorified postman)who recieved and collected mail from station staff after OPO, this was previously done by the Guard.

I remember the dispatch trains going up to Edgware to drop off the internal mail for distribution. That was a pain as you lost some of your turnround through putting this stuff in its rightful place.
