To celebrate its 25th? anniversary in summer 1990 Upminster depot had an open day and a steam train hauled by Met No.1 with a battery locomotive at the other end was running up and down the District Line.
Does anyone recall where the steam train ran from? One end was Upminster station and depot, but I no longer remember the other terminus.
I have video footage of this train at Upminster depot, Upminster, and Hornchurch stations.
Underground News July 2015 p374 mentions this train in passing, in a large article about "steam on the Met" services over the years. Alas, UN does not say where the train ran from.

I would have expected it to run a shuttle between Upminster station and the depot, but this article suggests it went to Upney www.lurs.org.uk/articles13_htm_files/02%20may%202013%20When%20was%20The%20Last%20Steam%20Train%20on%20the%20Underground.pdfcue jokes about how such an idea is nearly barking.

I was working at Hornchurch then and I think it was this train that set fire to the embankments that were tinder dry.
Ps. I have the programme for Upminster's Depot's 50th Anniversary celebrations 29-30 August 2009. 1959-2009 The steam loco L99 was there but I do not think it left the depot but shunted about on the reception road. Sarah Siddons and various buses were on display.

I dont recall it running into the depot I know it went into Upminster station and the other end was Upney as it reversed in Barking Sidings.
I also remember it was a 3 car D Stock which took people into the depot and they were opening the doors only on the middle car I also remember driving it most of the way into the depot.

Thanks for putting up the photos , the steam train did go into the depot. But did it carry passengers ? Also I know some of the staff in the photos, but will not give there names as some are still working on the Underground .

As part of an Upminster depot open day event a steam train ran between the temporary platform at the depot and Upney station.
This film shows the train at Hornchurch station, Upminster station and the depot. Also seen are the temporary platform at the depot, Classes 321, 308 and D78 trains.
This train comprised: Met No.1 steam locomotive, 2 former British Railways passenger carriages and battery electric locomotive No. L44
The passenger carriages look like they were: Mk1 BSK No. 35011 numbered 977588 (brake second corridor) and Mk2C FO No. 3152 numbered 977547 (first open)
Enjoy!

I've no idea who worked on the footplate, only that in those days the rules were likely somewhat different to 'today'.
btw, here is the film from the depot.
Enjoy!
