Hi All. Does anyone know if the 1938 tube stock on the Isle of Wight kept all its original motors and traction control equipment to give that lovely original hum under acceleration and whine under braking, or has all this been upgraded so it sounds nothing like it used to. Darren.

Its got the origional equipment, apart from some of the brake controllers. They keep shipping out the equipment for overhaul back to LUL. Go figure really! When I visited St Johns depot a few years back they had just had a flood and there were litterally crates of controllers, resistance grids, and other stuff waiting to be sent back to the mainland.
EDIT: Just to add; the noise from a four car train over there compared to that of the 1938ts in presevation is slightly different; probably due to the train formation and track condition

That's because the only cars sent to the Isle of Wight were Driving Motors (DMs) - a 4-car unit on the Island Line consists of 4 DMs!
The Museum 1938TS has two trailers in the formation, so it consists of DM-T-T-DM.

Nope; the one in preservation is DM-T-NDM-DM isnt it? But yeah; its the number of motored cars and the weight of them that makes it different

Definately worth it Darren! I'm in Bournemouth so if you want someone for company... ;D Thanks for the offer, by the way are you going to the meet on Saturday 9th. It just so happens that the wife and mother in law are off to see the Masters tennis at the Albert Hall on that day, so me and the farther in law said we'll come and do some sights and pubs around the city. Might just pop into the Met Bar for an ale. Darren.

DM 10012 + T 012256 + NDM 12048 + DM 11178 I thought the 'D' end DM was 11012. Also what is the DM in Covent Garden?

The S Stands for Streamline, because these cars had a flared front to them.

Correct me if i am wrong the SNDMs were converted to UNDMs which became Nos 9**** then onto 1****. Hence the formation DM-T-NDM-SNDM+SNDM-T-DM.

The 1938ts Brake Controllers are all from 59ts scrapped units. The traction motors are LT100 the original motors. one traction motor is rated at 168 hp

The SNDM are 'special' because they were standard NDM but with guards controls in. We must remember that the 9 car trains were formed of DM-NDM-SNDM-T-NDM-T-SNDM-NDM-DM and the last two cars would be in tunnel so the guard could not use the panel in the rear DMs! Therefore the SNDM were created.
As stated, after the 9 car plan was dropped, all 20 SNDM were converted to UNDM along with 2 NDMs. Inaddition, ward couplers that were provided on the SNDM to emergency couple were also removed! These 22 UNDM were added to the 70 new 49ts UNDMs. The guards panels from the SNDM were added to the 9 car DMs which didn't have panels originally.
