This may be more of a Northern Line question but I visited London 6 times between 1982 and 1987 and while most of my tube journeys were on the District and Piccadilly lines I rode the Northern line several times in inner London and once to the RAF museum in Colindale. This was before I was aware of the specific types of tube stock, although the differences between 1973 stock and D stock were pretty clear. I remember being struck by how much older and dirtier the Nortern was and also how much smaller the cars felt. I know that 59/60/62 stock would have been running on the Northern but when and how often were 1938 stock running and would either the District or Piccadilly have been running anything besides D/C and 1973 respectively? Thanks

In those days there were only five 1938TS running on the Northern, mainly as cover for the unreliable 1972MkIs.

Thanks SlowJoeCrow - On the District you may have been lucky enough to have caught the last of the R stocks before their withdrawal in 1983. Other than that I believe that the C's and D's were the norm... although I have to say at this time I was only an infrequent visitor up to London as I was only 10-15 years old during the years you mention. As for the Pic I believe the use of 59 stock had ceased long before, when the last of the 73 units had been delivered...

The answer is - you yourself would know! The 38ts was red all its life (with the odd occasional embellishment) and the 59ts and 72ts were always unpainted in those days. So, if you remember a red train it was a 38ts.

Co-incidentally, look at the time Phil made his reply...

I remember getting on the starlight train on the Bakerloo when I was about 13. Even my Dad was impressed... until I made him stay on it all the way to Queen's Park and back to Piccadilly Circus.

It seems that the last, 1962 Stock, on the Aldwych shuttle was in October 1979 so 1973 Stock had taken over on the Picc completely then. I am still trying to get a definitive date when the last (five?) 1938 Stock trains, that had returned to the Picc, were transferred away. Hatton Cross opened in 1975 of course, and some 1938 Stock ran down the extension though I cannot recall any!

Thanks for the quick and comprehensive replies. R stock is out because I distinctly remember the door open buttons on what I now know are D stock, and as far as I remember the Northern Line trains were silver. I guess I'll have to got to the LT Museum to see one. I also had a bit of timewarp experience the other day when I was looking in my London A to Z and couldn't find Stratford Market Depot or Canada Water station, because it was from my last trip in 1998.

The 38ts stock was finally retired from the Northern in 1988. They were withdrawn earlier on the line and then reinstated as TOK said due to stock shortages. If only, they ran in service now!

Thanks Bill, as I have never had a definitive answer and no back copies of Underground News to look back on.

1938 stock definitely ran to Hatton Cross in service, not sure if the 59 stock made it to Heathrow though.

Indeed they did, Hatton Cross to Heathrow Central opened Friday 16 December 1977. The last 1959 stock train ran on the Picc Friday 5 October 1979.

I have very distant memories from around this time (I was born in '75, so not very old then!) of red trains on the northern (must've been the 38 stock) and the R stock on the sub-surface lines - distinctly remember the flared out body sides...And the H&C was still a branch of the Met IIRC... Used to like sitting next to the guard on the northern (and the other lines of course), and also remember the manually operated lifts at Kennington! All of the above sadly distant memories now...

I know I rode the 1938 stock on the Isle of Wight, can't really remember riding them on LT, althought I'm sure I did. Can remember CO/CP and R stock as I can remember the red and silver flares on the stock. I don't think I ever rode Q stock as, despite being born a year before the last Q stock train was taken out of service, my parents didn't take me to London. But who knows!

I used to operate the Kennington lifts manually from the cars on occasions, although by the time I worked there in 98 there was no point in doing so. My excuse was to regulate the lifts as No1 was slightly faster than No2 and they would catch each other up after about half an hour. I could have done it from the landing of course, but that would have been boring.

Ahhh, I remember Kennington back in the day when there was a dedicated lift operator and pax weren't allowed to press any buttons! Bit before your time I suspect - this was up to about '87...I guess the lifts were re-fitted some time after that?

When I was about 3 or 4, I used to travel from Old Street to Euston with my parents to visit my aunt. I was always impressed when a red train came in - I was fascinated by the bare bulbs, as I recall!
After this, I only recall going on 2 1938 stock trains. The first was on the Bakerloo around 1981 when I was going with my dad to Baker Street to visit the Planetarium. The second was in 1987, when I was out with my mate exploring London. We were coming from Edgware, and after passing Golders Green saw a 38 waiting to come out of the depot. We got out at Hampstead, and right on cue, the 38 was right behind. Lovely trains and so comfortable - you could sit in those armchair seats all day!

I only travelled once on a '38' ,in 1981 i first visited London ,it was between Baker ST and Piccadilly circus. I never got back to London for a few years, so i missed out on them. I will definitely look out for the next tour though.
