When I was growing up in Walthamstow we lived in a small road that backed onto this line about midway between Queen's Rd coal depot & Boudary Rd goods depot. In the days of steam did the service go all the way to St Pancras?I'm sure the cutback to Kentish Town only occured after DMUs came in.

Queens Rd and Boundary Rd depots were the same, weren't they? I never knew why they renamed the passenger station Queens Rd! Yes, there were steam workings through to St Pancras, but I'n not sure if the curtailment to Kentish Town happened before or after DMU conversion...

From JE Connor's St Pancras to Barking album (Middleton Press),
Steam ceased in the 1950's.
The East Ham Branch/connection went in 1958.
The latest timetable in the book is 1960-3 through trains to Barking from St Pancras early doors, and one on Saturday Lunchtime & that's all.
According to the Barking-Gospel Oak Committee's sites, a few diesel railcars called at St Pancras 'up to the close of 1966'.
Hope that all helps.

There were also of course the St Pancras to Southend trains, in the late 50s generally hauled by a 2P or even a compound. Plus Tilbury boat trains. I don't remember DMUs into St Pancras as late at 1966, but there may have been a few workings. When I worked for the LMR in about 1971 at St Pancras, I was told in no uncertain terms "Don't use our road [the Goblin] or you'll be late every day!"

Table 18 of my Summer 1963 Eastern Region timetable shows three early morning journeys in and out of St Pancras, Monday to Friday only.
Services were generally half hourly dropping to hourly M-F afternoons. Sunday times were weird with departures from Kentish Town are as every 15 minutes from 07:45 until 11:30 and then half hourly. In the return direction services were every 30 minutes until 17:40 then every 15 minutes until 22:10. No through trains are shown but there were a number of LT&S services starting at Barking which I suppose could have been worked by the stock arriving from Kentish Town.

Weird that Sunday trains were every 15 mins whilst Mon - Fri afternoons were hourly!

The Sunday service in 1963 Summer would have been the connections for Southend, I think. Latterly at least the Southend excursion trains on the Goblin appeared in the public timetable, whereas those from Chingford (via Hall Farm Jc-Lea B and Stratford) didn't, as I recall. These latter were a really good half-crown's worth, as you got a complete circuit of Stratford loco in and out. Those run for the illuminations were not so good, as it was dark when they returned. Motive power was generally L1 or B2/B17s, stock, whatever Thornton Fields could rustle up, generally a mix of GE and Gresley corridors.

I can remember getting the weekend excursion to Southend from Walthamstow(Queen's Rd) they used the loco that during the week worked the local goods & coal trains.
