For background, Towerman's comments referred to by Hindenburg were in reply to a question cdr113 posted on This thread on the Circle and H&C board: apologies if its been asked elsewhere, but what exactly does a metadyne machine do? is it some type of traction control equipment? Yes,basically traction current from the pick-up shoes comes in one end of the machine and it puts out a voltage the other end to work the traction motors, apparently it gave very smooth acceleration but it wasn't very reliable and the system was very complicated, all metadyne machines were removed from the O & P stocks in the mid 50's leaving just a couple of battery locos fitted, these were scrapped in the early 70's.

Yes, the metadyne was basically a HUGE reversible motor/generator device. For current (sorry! ) equivalent in a small scale, Ford have just started using a much smaller similar device as a starter motor/alternator in some Transit vans. Technology of device is simple - control of system much harder.

Villiers used a "Dynastart" on their 2-stroke engines over 40 years ago..Lucas or was it CAV? Was the Metadyne as fitted to the Battery Locos the same as that fitted to Sub-Surface stock?

Thanks for posting that Hindenburg, I have always wondered just what exactly a Metadyne was and did, so now I know!

Thanks for posting that Hindenburg, I have always wondered just what exactly a Metadyne was and did, so now I know! You can find a picture of it in 'Steam to Silver' Found it. It weighed three tons! That is one heavy piece of machinery!

An 8 car O or P with the Metadyne working must have been an experience indeed! When did they run eight car O & Ps on the main Met. please? Didn't the regen. drop out on the gap where the underpass from depot joins the main at Wembley Park? It's a big old gap! How did they make up the eight car formation and where were they maintained please? Where there any problems stopping at Chorleywood SB platform, did the overspeed protection stay in? Moor Park NB could have been fun. Great post thanks!

8 Car 'P'stock (Reply #7)
The additional 2 Car Unit was added at the end of a 6 Car Unit. I do not remember the 'P' stock trains being made up of other than 6 or 8 cars I travelled on the P stock frequently between Baker Street and Harrow and did not notice any unusual motion, in fact the P stock often appeared smoother than the 'T' or Loco hauled trains. The 'O' stock was used on the Hammersmith line and was only made up in 6 car units.

Sounds like they were wonderful machines... I wonder if there are any recordings of that wonderful noise?
