Ladies/Gents
Having been in contact with the Low Hall Transport Museum/Lea Valley Experience Project Executive I have learnt that there are issues as regards the above CP car that currently resides at the museum.
The car was rescued from the scrap lines at Ealing or Upminster and in 1993/94 when I was studying at the University of Greenwich (part of a Building Surveying project), I came across it on land used by the North Greenwich Railway Society (they were on site that day and granted me access – sadly the photos I took then were accidentally destroyed). Then it was then stored in the open/exposed to the elements and was rusting with considerable water ingress damage with the doors being stacked internally. Today it would appear that the car has had little/no work actioned on it since, so you can now imaging the state it is in.
The private owner (the car is not owned by Low Hall/Lea Valley Experience) has appeared to have lost interest or has not had the funds to develop the restoration further (all too common in the railway restoration world). The museum asked the owner that the car be removed from site by 1st May 2005, however needless to say, the car is still there.
An Appeal
The Lea Valley Experience would like to display the car at the Low Hall, however unless restoration work starts very shortly (the responsibility of the owner and given current circumstances it seems very unlikely) the museum will need to find it a new home for it.
The Lea Valley Experience Project Executive has asked whether any forum members have the knowledge/skills to conduct an assessment of the car so that the museum can fully understand its condition and can act accordingly. To this extent do any forum members think that they have the skills/knowledge to assist the museum.
If you can assist or can suggest ways forward/people who may be in a better position to help can you please PM me asap
NOTE: My immediate reaction was to suggest the LU Museum (Covent Garden/Acton), however as I have recently been in conversation with them, I am aware of how stretched they are as regards space (Covent Garden refit/refurb) and skilled manpower (e.g. slowness of the 38ts re-licensing/restoration work due to having to reassign staff to road vehicles maintenance).

Also the car has been discussed on the UKTrainsim Forum (courtesy of ‘cabdarren’) – with photos taken last weekend at the Pump House open day of its slow and painful demise.
