First Dartford, then LOBSTER - the London Outer Borough Oyster, then the WORLD.

Another step towards Oyster world domination! The next one is rumoured to be the Hertford East branch in Mid October with all stations on that new section of line being in Zone B apparently.

So what did happen to Epsom? SWT stamp their little foot again?

Given that fares from both Hertford stations are set by GTR it would be strange if Oyster PAYG was not extended to Hertford North at the same time. To do otherwise would give AGA a commercial advantage. That's precisely why the earlier undertaking to extend Oyster to Hertford East was cancelled once the DfT realised that the two stations were grouped for fare setting and at the time FCC were under no requirement within their franchise agreement to agree to such an extension!

All true but was it also not the case that AGA were very keen to have Oyster to Hertford East and FCC also wanted, despite their lack of franchise obligation, to see modest extensions to Oyster acceptance north of London on both GN and T/Link. I thought the DfT kyboshed the latter aspiration which then killed the whole thing. Now we seem to be doing it backwards with the Key coming first to GN and T/Link on 30 September but no word about Oyster acceptance in parallel (despite the franchise "reason endeavours" requirement) with AGA coming up behind with Oyster acceptance but no ITSO based card acceptance despite them being signed up to introduce ITSO based Smart ticketing as part of SEFT. Presumably they don't have the ITSO head office infrastructure (HOPS etc) in place yet.

So what did happen to Epsom? SWT stamp their little foot again? I was going to write something rude about SWT but thought I'd check brfares.com to see what fares are in the system. Interestingly there are Smart fares for seasons, singles and returns from Epsom to London with both SWT and Southern only fares in the system. Looks like the TOCs have done the necessary work without any obvious fuss.

But there are no PAYG Oyster fares quoted from Epsom (compare Ewell West, which does have them). As recently as just before the election, the local MP was declaring Oyster at Epsom to be a done deal - now he is pleading austerity.

I made a mistake - presumably the Smart fares are for "the Key" acceptance at Epsom.

Another step towards Oyster world domination! Wait till we see Zone 10! Watford Junction is already Zone 10, sorry (that's what it says on the ticket machines here anyway, as "Zones 1-9 + Watford Junction" is too hard to show!)
