I am getting confused about LO/LU oyster charging. A journey from Loughton or Buckhurst Hill to Hampstead Heath off peak costs me £1 (with a third railcard discount), but Chingford to Clapton £1.25. How would a journey using the same Oyster from Loughton to Clapton via Stratford (pink reader)and H/HD (pink reader) be charged?

The off peak discounts on the WA routes are less than on Underground and North London Line. You would pay less for a peak journey from Chingford to Clapton.

Since TfL took over West Anglia and the Shenfield line and the TfL tariff was extended to the Waltham Cross route there has been another tariff added to the ever increasing list of PAYG tariffs. The list is now LU / DLR / Overground (includes some NR routes with long standing interavailabilities plus FGW who joined later) LU / DLR / Overground / West Anglia (higher fares for some zonal journeys on this tariff) Euston - Watford route (local journeys only) National Rail (excluding interavailable routes and FGW) National Rail / TfL through fares (for routes which charge a Z1 premium) You can then add in the complexities of higher rates to Watford Junction, Broxbourne, Shenfield and the Grays routes on C2C. You can check fares for any journey using PAYG on the TfL Single Fares Finder. I use this to check fares and any validation requirements for any journeys I make using PAYG. It will get even worse with the impending introduction of PAYG / CPC between St Pancras and Stratford on HS1 plus today's announcement that PAYG / CPC is also being applied to the Hertford East route run by AGA (no introduction date given). We also have Dartford due in September and Gatwick Airport at some point.

PAYG/CPC will not come into force on AGA to Hertford East until it also applies to Hertford North (and WGC and Luton Airport Parkway) as contained in the TSGN Franchise agreement. Fares from both Hertford stations are 'grouped' and the responsible TOC is TSGN - so only when the commercial negotiations are complete between TfL and TSGN and by implication DfT, will we see the 'Hertfords' PAYG-able! But according to insiders that won't be long in coming. Gatwick and Epsom are also PAYG targets set in the TSGN franchise, and of course Dartford and Swanley on SE. In the medium term of course we have stations out to Reading as well under TfL Crossrail!

I know there is a franchise (sort of) commitment about Oyster on TSGN north of the Thames but I thought the emerging consensus was that it was in the "too difficult" box with existing Oyster functionality. The Key will be implemented regardless. Thanks for the reminder about Swanley and Epsom - I keep forgetting those two. Looks like the September fares change could be rather exciting with more excitement in Jan 2016.

No surprises really about Hertford. The original AGA Franchise contained a clause about PAYG to Hertford East. However, DfT suddenly realised that they couldn't do it unless Hertford North was included and at the time FCC was unwilling so it was all moved into the 'lets do it later' pile. Oyster on Prestige and SEFT are moving ahead and DfT or rather Ministers and Boris are very keen to see PAYG extended out as far as possible as quickly as possible.
