"The London Overground station at West Hampstead has been granted planning permission by the London Borough of Camden. We're rebuilding the station with a brand new entrance directly to the south of the existing one, providing a better experience for our customers. This work is part of the London Rail Capacity and Growth Programme.
The new station will provide step free access to both platforms via lifts on a new wide footbridge over the tracks. It's designed to accommodate future growth in passenger numbers, with more gates and a much larger passenger circulation area. The design is also set back further from the road to allow the pavement to be widened, and integrated with the Ballymore housing development and public square.
The station has received £1.8m of funding from the Department for Transport’s Access for All fund, and £900k from the adjacent Ballymore housing development. The remainder is being invested by us. Full costs will follow pending bids and detailed designs.
Mike Stubbs, Director of London Overground, said: 'This is by far the largest Access for All scheme on the London Overground network and is a key interchange for north west London, given the proximity to West Hampstead’s Thameslink and LU stations. Its great that we have planning permission now, particularly having personally say through five and a half hours of the planning committee. Our submission was unanimously approved with little discussion and no change, a great tribute to the team who consulted widely and worked hard to provide a good design. Work is expected to start in early 2016 and take approximately a year. The old station will remain open until the new one is complete, minimising disruption.'"
