I picked up a year set of Railway Magazine (1960) at Didcot Steam Centre and came across a short article on stock commissioning in the June issue. The three pages are available: here (1), here (2) and here (3). Interesting how each seven car unit arrived carrying its shoe gear as a load inside but the cars cannot be coupled up to the match cars in their original order but have to be mixed up. Resorting them is one of the first jobs in commissioning them. I take it this is a coupling issue with the internal ones being different to the external ones – is this right? I also wonder if today's commissioning period is also eight days per set?
