It's been announced that Ian Allan has died at the age of 93. It's fair to say that anyone of a certain age owes this man a debt of gratitude RIP

RIP. 93 is not a bad innings.

Along with David & Charles, the major force behind modern railway books and kick-starting the preservation movement as a consequence.
Sad loss.

A photographic reminder of what Ian Allen started off for many lads back in the days of steam. Some fantastic photos in the article. I had no idea that trainspotting was that popular!

At my school in the early to mid 60s it was bus rather than train spotting but still with the Ian Allen books.
I wonder how many modern parents would let a 13 or 14 year old travel round London the way we did with the old Red Rover tickets?
