Alongside the track on the Uxbridge branch I notice some fresh signs, about the size of car number plates, black on white, format PCnnn, sometimes suffixed X. Presumably identifying some feature of the permanent way, but I can't work out it might be.
Any ideas?

I saw some of these on the Hainault Loop the other day, e.g. at an underbridge W2143 is on what looks to be a retaining wall at cess level and N36 is at about eye level for pedestrians on one of the bridge abutments.

hmm, could "W" then be "Wall"? I can easily believe that LU have >2000 of them. I can't place "N" though still

I am always intrigued by signs that say "Heavy Plant Crossing", and signs that say "Lift" (although the doors actually slide across sideways), and the instruction to "Wet Paint" (which can actually result in a fine and you being placed on the Sex Offenders Register).

And announcements that you should make sure you have all your belongings with you... that's a lot of stuff to carry.

And announcements that you should make sure you have all your belongings with you... that's a lot of stuff to carry. That's one of those things you think every time they make the announcement. I'd been hearing it for years and was delighted when Paul Merton included a sketch in 'The Paul Merton Show' where the announcement was made, and then there was a scene of everything including the kitchen sink coming out of a carriage door.

in 'The Paul Merton Show' wthe announcement was made, and everything including the kitchen sink coming out of a carriage door. Alexei Sayle did the same gag. We've had it before, but "Dogs Must be carried, Tickets Must be shown" Subtly different meanings to "must".

Pre the general smoking ban: "Than you for not smoking" - so if you are smoking the sign clearly does not apply to you.

"I would like to apologise for the delay, "
Why don't you then?
"We are stopped at a red signal"
You're apologising for stopping at a red signal?

"We are stopped at a red signal" You're apologising for stopping at a red signal? Every time I hear that 'we are being held at a red signal" (which is the version they seem to use on the H&C), I want to respond: "Oh, and I thought you had just stopped because you thought the train needed a rest."

From a pre-recorded announcement: "Customers are reminded that smoking and drinking alcohol is not permitted on London Underground."
So doing just one of those is OK?

I came across an "RW" the other day that was helpfully labelled "retaining wall". I can't remember where it was now, but it wasn't immediately obvious that it was retaining anything!
