I was mid journey today using an annual season on theKey (Southerns's ITSO) which includes an all-zones travelcard and it stopped working. Touched in at my local station, out at Victoria Mainline, in at Victoria District Line and then got denied exit (on all gates) at another district line station. Gate-line staff said it wasn't a valid card. I protested that it was valid just not working. They said it wasn't Oyster therefore couldn't be used on the tube. I tried the ticket office (yes, there still was one), first person said it wasn't valid, second person did seem to recognised that theKey might possibly be valid but the ticket office Oyster reader showed a comms failure. Showing the paper "gold record card" which can be used to get discounts didn't seem to carry any weight despite it having a roundel and saying Zones 1-6 because also it says not valid for travel.
Eventually I wore them down and they were glad to see the back of me. I'm not sure how I'm going to get back to Victoria tonight.
My question is: do gate-line staff get told about the various ITSO cards that are now becoming common on London commuter lines? Southern are making a lot of use, the rest of GTR will soon, SWT on its way etc.

My question is: do gate-line staff get told about the various ITSO cards that are now becoming common on London commuter lines? Southern are making a lot of use, the rest of GTR will soon, SWT on its way etc. This "failure to recognise the Key" issue has arisen before (Sept 2014). It was reported on another forum and I believe TfL undertook to improve the briefing of staff so that there would not be a failure to recognise the Key smartcard as being acceptable for use on LU. Whether the briefing happened I can't say but I've no reason to doubt what was reported on the forum given the individual endured a lot of grief and challenged the transport operators to sort out the mess. To be strictly accurate I've gone back to the posting and it involved bus revenue inspectors. However I would hope that a holistic view was taken by TfL to remind station and bus staff about the Key. The problem with a lot of briefing material is that there is a reliance on staff doing the right thing and reading what is sent to them / put on display rather than being locked in a room and being briefed by a manager and then being "tested" to ensure they've understood what's been said. The only way to find out is for you to complain about your experience to TfL Customer Services and specifically ask what has been done about briefing station staff so they recognise the Key (and any other variants like Stagecoach Smart or C2C's Smartcard - all of which can hold Travelcards).

Sadly, I can confirm that us gateline staff haven't been told anything about the availability of non-Oyster smart cards or otherwise. It's not communicated in any of the regular T&R bulletins and nor was it highlighted in core training.
For future reference, though, the POMs can now read ITSO cards and show any available products, so if a member of staff is denying you access ask them to accompany you over to a machine where details can be shown. And perhaps drop TfL an email explaining that an issue has been had...

I am really surprised that ITSO cards like the Key have not been mentioned. Not sure who produces the bulletins nowaddays but I know who used to do them and I can't believe they would have missed out something important like acceptance of ITSO spec cards which can carry Travelcard products or be presented at locations with shared LU / NR gatelines.

I can quite believe that this would be "somebody elses problem" and nobody would think it their responsibility to get something put in the bulletin.

I can quite believe that this would be "somebody elses problem" and nobody would think it their responsibility to get something put in the bulletin. Fine - you may believe that and I understand why you've said it as a general point. I don't know if you have seen or receive the bulletins but I used to see them. They always struck me as a decent balance between being readable and dealing with some involved issues. They also weren't insular in just concentrating on LU issues although that's the main content. Issues on other bits of the wider transport network in London were also covered. Now it's possible the scope of the bulletins has changed or the authors have changed but I always felt it was a good channel for getting info "out there" to staff as well as providing a feedback channel for questions and queries and providing answers.

Why wasn't the Traffic Circular updated? - I thought important ticketing issues were traditionally shown in the Traffic Circular every week?

Revenue matters are now in their own, weekly, "Hot Issues" bulletin, separate to the Traffic Circular, and there has been no mention in these either.
