Do some of our older members remember the two incidents on the Central and Northern Lines where the guards were so busy looking at the eye candy that they forgot to put their heads in at the headwalls with fatal results. The Central incident was at Chancery Lane EB and the Northern one was actually between stations entering the Hendon Tunnel NB(God knows what he was looking at there)I was at Hainault when the Chancery Lane incident occured, all they did was remove the body at St Paul's,run empty to Hainault, clean out the claret from the guard's position and back into service for the evening peak. These days the train would have been a scene of crime for about two weeks, how times change eh?

I had a feeling that something like this may have happened. I've always had the terrible thought of a guard falling out as his train left the station, but what you mention is quite horrific in comparison. Have guards always been required to 'see the train out'? On NR & DLR, the guard doesn't give the signal until their door is shut, so why not on LU?

I believe that the Chancery Lane one was a case of the guard having a letter for the station. Instead of leaving it at the rear of the platform, he decided to throw it out further down the platform and closer to the entrance. Unfortunately he forgot the tunnel wall. The story as I heard it was that, one morning rush hour, on arrival at St Pauls the driver, wondering why the doors hadn't opened, called the guard up. On getting no response, he made his way down towards the rear car to see passengers ducking under the guards bar and stepping over the guards body. It seems that no-one had operated the emergency alarm. Bearing in mind that this is how I heard the story, and although it could have been'stretched', I was on the Central Line at the time as a guard myself, so I tend to believe it.

I've always had the terrible thought of a guard falling out as his train left the station, Have guards always been required to 'see the train out'? On the 'big' railway, until power doors were fitted the guard was REQUIRED to see his train out of the station and 99% of them always did it by leaning out of the open door. Route knowledge meant that they always knew about restricted clearances and 'wobbles' in the track. This was never considered dangerous- just have a look at the guards on the remaining slam-door stock before they go

I too have heard these stories although I was told the northern line incident happened at leicester square. It was easily done. In my days as a guard on the Northern I came very close to losing my head at Camden once on a late turn!! I guess the monotony of the job gets to you! Even to this day (since i became a driver) i've found myself braking too early or too late for said reasons. Especially in this weather!!! ;D

You're just lucky your not driving the road train thing which goes along Bournemouth sea front! I could just imagaine it knocking over pedastrian after pedastrian, vearing towards the more liberally dressed sun bathers, and then toppling over the edge of the promanade!

It's more deeply ingrained than some are prepared to admit. On BBC1 last night (Secrets of the sexes) they showed 5 men a news bulletin presented partly by a guy and partly by a good-looking woman. All the men remembered the items read by the guy but NOT ONE could remember anything read by the woman. They could remember what she looked like and what she was wearing though! The psycho-guru said this was perfectly normal male behaviour and that men should take extra care when driving for this very reason.

As many of you know I wouldn't perv whilst driving my train, but imagine a freak shower after todays weather!! Nearly went through Earl's court platform 2 that way about 3 years ago for just that reason. As you can imagine, there were no wet T shirts at all!!!! ;D

The story we got at Hainault about Chancery Lane was that just as he passed the entrance/exit the guard was distracted by a pretty lady and forgot the headwall was coming up.Re the Northern Line incident,it was definitely at Hendon tunnel mouth, they didn't figure out what had happened to the guard till either a passing or following train reported a body in the six foot.
