What happens when you "insert Ftp link"? The little icon is the 3rd one along on the bottom row. [ftp][/ftp] Comes up like this. What's it for?

That would be used if you want to link to a file on an FTP server (rather than HTTP) server.
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It's an alternative way of transferring files between computers. It was designed for files, rather than web sites from the start, so is a bit better at transferring large files. Putting downloads on an FTP server also takes the load off your web server, so it's less likely to keel over if it suddenly becomes popular.
Unlike HTTP (which is used for normal web browsing), it's a two way protocol, allowing files to be uploaded to the server as well as downloaded. It supports password protected access, but anyone using this these days (as opposed to Secure FTP) needs an appointment with a LART as passwords are transferred in completely insecure plain text.
