Every other year I travel to London with a group of 13-14 year old students as part of an exchange program. We have always bought Group Day tickets when we arrive. I have read about the changes that have eliminated this option. We will be in London in two weeks from a Wednesday afternoon until Friday evening. What is our most cost efficient option? The LU options are so confusing to this outsider. Thank You!

I'm puzzled by your question as the TfL website (Fares and Tickets bit) still shows Group Day tickets as being available for adults and children. What have I missed? Group Day Tickets prices

I am sorry but I misunderstood the post from December. I see that they have replaced the group day ticket with the group day travelcard. After reading it over I realize that the main difference will be the inability to travel at peak times. This makes it difficult for us as we, during our 3 days there, will have to travel 6 or 8 times during peak. Knowing that, what do you think would be our cheapest option?

No need for an apology as there is a subtlety to your requirements *and* what's happened to the tickets I had not appreciated. I suspect the only viable option is to order Vistor Oyster Cards in advance and then have the Young Visitor discount set on the cards held by the younger people in your group. Visitor ticketsYoung Visitor DiscountNot knowing how many adults there are relative to the number of children in your group you might get caught out by the rules for number of children per adult for getting the discount set on the card. I have to say it all looks rather clumsy and expensive to me compared with the old arrangements.

It depends which zones you need to travel in. If, for example, you need only zones 1-2 then Oyster pay-as-you-go would seem to be the best option, with a maximum daily charge of £6.40 for adults and £3.20 for children. The snag is that the kids need to get a photocard in advance and that costs £10, so if you're only there for three days it would be cheaper for them just to pay adult fares.
If you need to travel outside zones 1-2 then it might be cheaper to buy the group tickets and use Oyster pay as you go for any peak time journeys you need to make. Would need to see your full planned itinerary to advise further!

www.tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/ticket-types/paper-tickets?intcmp=15331#on-this-page-2TfL Group day travelcards can be used any time after 0930, so it would seem only the two morning journeys would not be covered. These will presumably both be on National Rail services from Wandsworth Town: to Watford Junction (via Clapham Junction) for Levesden and to Waterloo (for Borough Market - NR tickets are valid on the Jubilee Line between Waterloo and London Bridge whilst the NR service between those stations is suspended, but you could be at Waterloo after 0930 anyway and be in time for Borough Market at 10:00. Check with SWT (who operate Wandsworth Town) what group travel facilities they offer in the am peak. As Jack the Ripper and Billy Elliott are both at Victoria, and Covent Garden is just round the corner from Charing Cross, travelling between them and the hotel will presumably also not need the Tube.
