I've been doing some spring cleaning and have found three what I think are Guard or Motorman keys. I'd like to know what they were for.
They are all two pronged forks, two with a peg about which they would rotate it use, the other has a segment that it would butt up against when in use.
The handles have 314/866, 314/867 and 314/868 cast into them on one side with PFW on the other.
Picture to follow when I'm not in the loft surrounded by boxes!

When I used to use the 38s regularly on the Northern Line, I remember the guard on certain occasions when he had to leave his position, a flap above the left hand guards position, he would lift it and remove a two pronged key. So I presume the key was used to activate his control panel. Not sure if the motorman had a similar key to activate his controls.

314/866 is a Guards Key and was used on all stocks with Guards panels, except the R stock, as mentioned above.
In addition the A stock had an another modified key when OPO came in, this being a combined Guards Position/Control Key which was offset, this being given number 314/1803, as the heaters were still controlled from the redundant Guards panels which were blanked over except for the car heaters, this ceased use when the stock was refurbished.
All modern stocks from 86 stock to the the 96's use the RKL 220 key only, the D and 73's use the Control Key 314/867 and the RKL 220.(the 73's lost the use of Reverser key 314/868 when refurbished) I also remember both the 73's and D's had guards keys used when the Guard operated the doors from the rear cab, these both became redundant and switches blanked off when the stocks were converted to OPO operation.
the S stock and 09's use another key for the Control switch

Thanks gang.
AIUI the S stock keys are bespoke to the operator, is this the same with the 09ts?

the S stock and 09's use another key for the Control switch Flipping heck I worked with 73 stock from introduction through refurb and until 1/1/2011.
I thought the 73 stock kept their reverser key up until the present time, but seeing this written down here I am beginning to doubt my own mind. I'm as sure as I can be that RKL 220 released the reverser barrel lock to enable the reverser key to be inserted and moved.
Please someone either confirm this or put me right - I won't be able to sleep now until I know!

HI 73 t/stock use a RKL 220 key to unlock reverser barrel. and when you put control key in its linked by a rod to the guards switches as well. FISH7373

R stock required 2 guards keys prior to modification in 1971/2. the standard centre lug key livened the position, the offset lug key was used to open and close the doors. The guard had to be careful with that arrangement as new guards always found out when they cut their hands on the sharp edge of the door control quadrant.
The standard motorman control keys also fit the Ford diesel-electric on the K&ESR.

The one with the bigger opening also fits just nicely around a certain type of train stop to open it

As an aside just to prove the perversity of LTs/LUs stores system, when The Central had the 62TS there was a need for loads of Guard's keys, esp winter,to keep the heaters on overnight. These keys were always going missing and guess where the main stockist was?At Northumberland Pk Depot which maintained a stock that didn't use Guard's keys!
