I was at Waterloo catching a train Friday lunchtime and over the loudspeaker there was a siren or something and then an announcement for Inspector Sams or something to report a platform or something. On returning on Sunday, it announced Inspector Sams to report to Concourse Windsor. Normally I don't find announcements interesting but this sounded really unusual. Could I ask what it was about? It did not sound like a normal announcement, more automated, as though I was in an airport.

"Inspector Sands" is common staff "code" for a fire alert as not to instil panic in the public.
"Inspector Sands to platform 10" for example, would suggest that a fire alarm sensor had been triggered from platform 10 and staff needed to go and investigate.
Most stations do a test at least once a week.
