I think you'll find the actual reason for the strike is not an issue of them wanting the same pay as tube drivers, far from it. Bus drivers want consistency for doing the same job. At present, you have several different pay grades depending on which company employs you. There's a map doing the rounds online showing some of the pay inconsistencies on major Central London routes.
So no, tomorrow is not about "same salaries as tube drivers" at all!

Equal pay for equal work - is that really so hard to understand?

Agree with Sawb, this is nothing to do with pay parity with tube drivers. What makes you think that?
I feel the bus drivers have a good argument, they should all be paid the same, regardless of which company they work for. TFL could easily moderate here, but have stuck their head in the sand. As they issue the contracts to the bus companies, surely they have some influence, as well as an interest to see the dispute settled?

Ultimately I've been told the aim is to equalise pay with tube drivers as it was in the 80s. This is the start.

Some bus companies pay different rates to drivers on the same route (though not in London AFAIK). We had a member of this forum who is sadly no longer with us who worked as a bus driver in Lincolnshire where the same company had two garages sharing a route. One of those garages was in an area of high unemployment and the drivers were paid less than the drivers at the other garage.

Lothian RT pay different rates to single deck drivers than they do to double deck drivers. (Both are nominal - as a single deck driver may drive a double decker, so long as he's on a single deck route! I believe the union wanted this abolished, it may have been since).
I wonder what the effect on the tube will be? Fewer passengers (because railhead services don't run) vs more passengers (because services are not running).
Perhaps passengers could be compensated using the money which will not be paid to the contractors when they fail to discharge their obligations to run buses?

I found the tube at 0530 this morning noticeably busier. When I was at work, at a station on the edge of Central London, footfall was higher but not massively so, very few buses were going past, maybe 1 bus every 30-45 minutes on a road that has four routes. I think a lot of people have stayed at home.

Source: Telegraph via TomTom software Yup, the strike certainly did its job. London's roads are literally a gridlock full of road rage that I never thought of before.

Can you supply a source for this outrageous statement? I am nothing whatsoever to do with either London Buses, London Underground or any other part of Transport for London, but I find your statement immensely disrespectful and inappropriate.

Would be interesting to see which companies operated those routes. From what I know of some routes Stagecoach seem to have very few buses running.

It would not surprise me if the full job of driving a bus (including all the rules knowledge, interacting with passengers, etc) is indeed much harder than the act of shunting a tube train (not including the knowledge required to do the job of operating the train in passenger service). However that is not comparing like with like.

It was made by someone in a Facebook group. 'Bus driving is far more difficult than shunting a tube train and should be paid at least as much. Unite spend a lot of time and money with these ideas but deliver very little.'

This is not a bus forum - this forum is one for the supporters of London Underground. Driving a bus may be harder than shunting a tube train; this is not the place to discuss it though. Whilst monitoring and commenting on the Bus Strike <<particularly how it impacted LU>> was (just about) within the realm of the forum, we are now veering well outside of our scope. Thread locked.
