What's the max speed of the Central set at when running auto? I remember the 62ts could get up to about 60mph coming from Epping to Theydon, and around 50 to 55mph between Statford and Mile End. On recent visit home in Dec it seemed the trains were constantly being checked on some of the faster sections, made for quite an uncomfortable ride. And anyone know the fastest section on the network, past and present?

The 92ts is limited to 85kph. However before Chancery Lane they were allowed to hit 100 kph, which is rather fast! The Fastest section on the Central I would guess is between SOR & NOR. I believe the Jubilee is pretty nippy up on the JLE.

I believe the Jubilee is pretty nippy up on the JLE. If you have a good Train and give it all its got on departure from Canning Town, you can get up to 60mph on the gradient down to North Greenwich. Coming the other way you can only really hit 35mph because of the gradient going upwards, even then there's a 35MPH limit just after you leave the portal on curve on the approach to Canning Town.

The Fastest section on the Central I would guess is between SOR & NOR. While it's fast it generally feels (or at least used to feel) faster than it was as the track was so bad. My guess would be out east of Loughton for the really high speeds.

Roding Valley to Chigwell (both roads) seems quite fast on the Central Line.

Once came down from Theydon Bois on a 62 with handle wide open until the end of Debden sidings. Braked just as we got to the outlet points and STILL stopped on the mark (more by luck than judgement) Put the fear of the Lord into my mate in the cab.
As we went over the outlet points we were CONVINCED that the old wagon actually lost contact with the running rails for a fleeting second as there was a bounce that knocked him off his seat. Mind you the track on the Central east of Leyton Tunnel mouth was bloody atrocious anyway.

Have met some former colleagues who've told me some interesting stories about having an A60 off the clock coming down from Amersham... Whats the max on the speedo on them??
On the Northern, before these newfangled computer based things came in, driver said he came down from High Barnet once in POURING rain, had 60 on the clock, dropped the handle way before Totteridge, all wheels locked up, with a nice smell too... Nice flats on all aswell. I did hear [and I dunno how true this is] that when they were testing the 95's on the Barnet Branch, one of 'em touched 88mph, before the Op shut off because of fears over a possible accident.

A few years ago, a driver in Sydney was seeking how fast he could go with an early morning train of new stock. He didn't notice the route indicator for the slow line turnoff, and went into a 30 km/h junction at well over 100 km/h. Very new eight-car train was skittled over all four tracks, closing the line completely for two days.
I would have liked to hear his explanation.....
