Just saw a Japanese programme which talked about use of synthetic material for sleepers. Concrete replaced wooden sleepers as they are more durable, but since 1980 Japan has started to use sleepers made of expanded plastic containing glass fibres for strength. Their advantage over concrete is that they are much lighter to handle.
I wonder whether LU has ever considered using them.

I seen them in use in Stonebridge Park Depot Where the trains run very slowly. What are they like I wonder on high speed lines?

They are being used on normal (ie up to about 100kph) rail lines in Japan, and exported to a number of other countries, but I don't think they are used on the shinkansen (bullet trains).

The plan is to use them in place of Wooden Sleepers for Points and Crossing work across LU. The slipper runs (bits of wood around P&C areas where the negative shoes pass over) will also be synthetic.

I am sure I read somewhere in the Autumn that one of the heritage lines were trying them out. It might have been the Bluebell at Horsted Keynes!!!!!!!!

The new station on the Ffestiniog / Welsh Highland has been completed using these kind of sleepers. There are also a substantial number of them on The Cob (the embankment outside the station)
