With engineering works in the Surbiton area today, and the main lines closed, I just caught the second of two early morning SWT services running to Waterloo from Wimbledon Platform 4 via East Putney. I presume it to be a fairly rare thing so took a piccy! Hopefully this works correctly as I opened my Flickr account specifically to share it! Photo Link

back in 1915 when the first LSWR electric units appeared it would have been a regular thing for them to appear in the bay platforms on the via east Putney route, but the only regular SWT workings over that line run from the through platforms (5/6) so I think that is quite a catch! Did the driver need an LU pilot man to take it in and out of the bay?

The NR system seems to be under the impression of the train running from platform 5, albeit without a report of it leaving, although I suspect that is because the normally timetabled train leaves from there, but because of the engineering works, it can't access p5, hence the appearance in p4. I'm not sure about a pilot for the bay, yes it could probably do with one, but at 6:30 in the morning, would you be able to get one? The driver was probably told to go slowly, or talked through by the signaller.

It may be even something that the SWT drivers sign in case of an emergency or something requiring them to go there. Not sure how detailed "signing" a route has to be, would they have to go into all 4 District platforms or would a quick walk up them "this is the signal, these are the points to the East Putney line" etc suffice? Hmm...

Would they be allowed to travel with an LU I/op to learn the route?

NR drivers, possibly just from Wimbledon depot, are trained into Wimbledon, certainly pfms.3-4 for access to/from Wimbledon depot.

In my days at Waterloo the drivers from many depots signed Wimbledon-East Putney as a diversion route and ECS to/from Wimbledon Park. Part of the route learning included ALL signals and points at the particular location, and that would include the LU bay platforms.

There are quite a few ECS trips from Wimbledon Depot to Waterloo via East Putney, which probably doubles up as route learners. The 0042 Waterloo to Strawberry Hill used (still is?) to be booked to run via East Putney, though the times I tried to do that, it ended up going fast via Earlsfield and ending up in Wimbledon some 4-5 minutes early. Usually it was because the lines through Putney were shut or on one instance it was because the guard didn't sign the route

I've only ever gone the other way during service disruptions, (often sadly due to jumpers at Earlsfield), and didn't realise the bays could be used by SWT.

Indeed, in my experience the last two or three trains from Waterloo tend to be booked via East Putney. According to www.gensheet.co.uk/timetable.htm, the scheduled services via East Putney are 2312 Waterloo - Basingstoke 2254 M-Th Basingstoke - Waterloo 0042 M-F Waterloo - Strawberry Hill 0105 Waterloo - Southampton 0454 M-S Basingstoke - Waterloo Of course, none of these can use the bay platforms
