Good evening all,
I'm a new member to the forum, though I have spent many years looking at the old District Dave's site at various times. Thank you for allowing me to register, I hope I have posted this in the right place, 'historical' seemed most appropriate.
I'm here to talk about (and hopefully learn a bit more about) my grandfather, who was a signalman at Rayners Lane and completed a full career working for London Underground. Sadly, he passed away last week the afternoon of the 3rd of November. He slipped away peacefully after a morning in good spirits, despite failing health.
His name was John Mills, known possibly as 'Jack' to his close friends and family, he would have retired in the 80's so we are going back a way, but hopefully something might turn up. His trademarks were a bushy moustache, possibly with large sideburns, a watch with a thick leather strap, and a tattoo on his left forearm that always resembled a clock to me, but had probably faded from something else.
Images (if they don't attach) of how he looked in the early 80's are linked here: link and here link
I would be most keen to speak with anyone who knew or worked with him, or otherwise had any memory of him. Furthermore, if anyone would care to attend the funeral, I can provide details if you private message on here or contact via email to: thomasjreddy AT outlook DOT com
I have a final question, that anyone in the know may be able to help with: One of his wishes, was to have his ashes scattered at the signal box at Rayners Lane, and I was wondering what (if any) procedure there might be for these sorts of things. I intend to make contact with the station manager in due course, but I thought it would be much more straightforward if I could develop a warm contact first, so if anyone has any advice or pointers regarding this I would be most grateful.
I look forward to chatting with you, and thank you again for reading.
All the best,
Tom (montenvers)
