Hi
Wonder if anyone can help me. Can anyone let me know how LU dispose of old signs etc when they are refurbishing stations, and replacing signs with newer ones. I have seen quite few on Ebay and I know there are various collectors and auctions that sell them, but they must acquire them from some department within LU, unless of course they just go around various stations nicking them LOL
Any help gratefully received as I would like to acquire a few for the house.
Cheers
Martin

Removed signs are supposed to go to the LT Museum at Acton. Those of no historical value are auctioned to raise funds.
The BT Police monitor Ebay for stolen items.
Beware.
The LT Museum Shop has started a made to order replica service for some signs.

Interesting. I regularly see ex-LT stuff at flea markets and antique fairs, and feel certain that some of it must be suspect.
Regularly, you see it at the big fairs at Ardingly, Newark etc.

A fair bit of stuff gets sold off from the Acton Open days of the Museum from the "friends" stand. The police are alert to illicitly obtained items, as a member here can testify when carrying their recently purchased item from Acton Depot to the pub - you won't believe this officer, but... One of the best places I've found to pick up Underground stuff is bus fairs. I was rummaging through a box of bus flags and found something that perked my interest, a quick call to mrfs42 to clarify and I went back to the stall and picked up said item. There was no price tag on it so I asked the stall-holder, "erm.... about a tenner?" Never before has a Yorkshireman put his hand in his pocket so quickly, have done the deal I was then asked what it was "Outer home signal plate for Sloan Square Westbound replaced approx 1950 having been originally installed pre-war". "Oh." he said and looked a little miffed!

Haha, true, but given the opportunity of obtaining A780 B at a tenner I wasn't going to give him time to change his mind! I should say that the above is an approximation, I only knew roughly where it was from at the time and this forum subsequently identified it fully.

Sadly in reality many or even most items which survive the removal process intact end up in skips, those which are lucky get rescued, unfortunately this is why many of the signs on the market tend to be chipped or otherwise damaged.

Thanks Guys for your comments. I do not want to break any forum rules, but if anyone has any larger type signs that are taking up too much room and they want to get rid of them I would be interested in buying.
If this is not allowed please will an admin remove the post and let me know. I am a little surprised the form does not have a 'for sale' or 'wanted' section, but I am sure there is a good reason!

If there was, I would have asked to buy a complete D Stock unit! You raise a good point, though... Why can there not be a For Sale section? I'm sure there must be an interest in things

Because the short answer is that it's more hassle than it's worth. What happens when things go wrong, as they inevitably do, and the buyer comes the Forum Staff saying the item is fake/poor condition/not as described/not worth the money? We can't possibly get involved in that. In the Forum Rules, specifically point 6g, there is further information about what can and can't be done, including the amendment at the foot of the page.

Ah, I must have blinked when reading that section
Sounds fair enough - though a shame in some respects
