So far our resident LT expert Q8 (<fx: solidbond yelling in background>) has posted two stories in which his antagonist is his so-called 'favourite DMT' Mr. Parrish.
Why exactly did Mr. Parrish dislike Q8 so much?

Well, while we wait for Q8 to finish his holiday, I'd like to know if any of our resident T/Ops have any 'favourite DMTs' or other superiors whom they tend to avoid whenever possible - or better yet, whom they absolutely enjoy working with! ;D

I certainly have some interesting relationships with quite a few of the powers that be. Denouncing the policies of the company on primetime national TV does make your superiors look at you in a slightly odd manner, not to mention doing anything at all possible to look the other way when you meet them in a corridor. Which, of course, makes it all the more amusing to offer them an enthusiastic and profuse greeting! ;D And there are certain line controllers who, when on duty, make me fantasize about pulling the radio fuse to enjoy the blessed silence... On the other hand, there are also several managers, supervisors and controllers who actually are very, very good at what they do, and for whom I have a tremendous amount of respect, and with whom I get along very well. They also tend to be the ones with a lot of common sense and a very down-to earth approach to things. /Igelkotten

I think it's probably fair to say that different staff have different views of the same 'Manager' or 'Supervisor', and I suspect this is as much to do with the individual's 'work ethic' as it is to do with any change of overall approach by their 'superior'.
In fairness though, I'm sure we can all think of 'superiors' whose own work ethic is 'lacking' and who are probably not best popular amongst their peers, let alone the rest of the work force.......
I agree that the abilities of superiors does of course vary tremendously, and it's not always that it's because they've 'been there and done that' - common sense, willingness to learn and not adopt an entrenched position also has its part to play.
Interesting thought on the radio fuse though Igelkotten! One of the things with the C Stock is that there is a manual channel change on the radio, and on occasions the temptation to 'forget' to change channels is certainly tempting.

Oh, we can switch channels, too. However, the channel selctor also affects the train describer equipement and the icons displayed on the big situation board in the control room. Some controller migth start wondering what a line 2 train for Ropsten is suddenly doing heading towards Skarpnäck on line one. A deplorable lack of creativity, I must say!

Well back from my jollifications and much refreshed I will commence.
Now regarding Mr Parrish and me. First let me say that in my young days on the job I was a first class pratt and AI idiot. You see I had this thing about CME (RES) dept and thought them the laziest crowd of B-----ds under the sun. This came from the fact that you could book a defect on the trouble card and have the same train three days later and have the same bloody defect. This used to fill me with chagrin and I developed a complex about it and started to get bolshie. Ever after if a train had a defect I considered off out it came. Door defects, lighting defects, you name it. Well I got a reputation obviously for being a tip-out merchant and this got up Mr Parrish's nose. There were also suspicions that I was a saboteur but I can truthfully squash that. If I had a train out and Mr P was about then he made a bee-line for me. But when the defect was found to be genuine and pukka he had to go away frustrated and this annoyed him. He told me straight to my face that one day he was going to nail me. Let me state that although he did not like me there was no animosity in the man toward me at all. He just wanted me to toe the line or go. I don't iknow if the gentleman is still alive but if he is I wish him well and that now I am older than he was then I realise how right he was.

Well, Q8, under the circumstances I can see why Mr. Parrish would dislike you so much.
Given your explanation of why he disliked you, I wonder if any of the T/Ops on the combine have done anything similar (not that it's a Bad Thing, of course!)

I wonder if any of the T/Ops on the combine have done anything similar I know one person who did, but he wasn't a T/Op. He was a Guard then a Motorman.

Nice to see that absolutely nothing whatsoever has changed in the years since you were on the job, Q8! Must admit this is also one of my pet hates, although we are covered for taking trains out these days because we're doing it "on the grounds of health and safety". We also have the DISI manual (Defective In Service Instructions) which permit us to withdraw trains from service for a whole range of things. The Line Controllers are never too pleased when we take trains out of service (presumably because it affects their performance related pay) but if I'm driving a train which has been signed off several times for the same defect and has even had the defect confirmed by the mobile fitter (the depot staff don't trust the judgement of drivers), then I will take the train out of service. This of course means the maintenance company are fined, and the defect will usually get fixed then!
