One of the problems in taking photographs from a train, apart from the inevitable dirt on the window, is getting reflections from inside the carriage. I have an idea to make a light proof hood which would fit over the camera lens tube and press up against the window. The material would need to be flexible enough to allow the camera to move a little, but strong enough to keep it pressed against the glass to keep the light out. Any ideas on suitable material or design?

In terms of material, I think rubber is probably your best bet.
In terms of design, my first thought is to make it slightly conical, tapering towards the lens. This will allow a bit of freedom of movement of camera angle without it appearing in the frame and also make it slightly more deformable than a cylinder to maintain a seal against the window when the camera is not perpendicular to it.
Separately, a polarising filter can also reduce the impact of reflections.

Rubber lens hoods are readily available. Check on the interweb or find a decent camera shop. they should be able to sort you out.
