In the two years I've been commuting from South Woodford, I've never seen a train with that destination, but there was one last week. I think it may have been on the day of the problems at Chancery Lane. This was in the late-ish evening - would that day's disruption explain this, or is it just something I've missed so far?

You know, until very recently I had never seen a train up as a South Woodford either. The day's disruption was quite possibly involved. Are you familiar with the track layout at Woodford station? If not click. Adjacent to the station are five sidings. These are usually accessed from 21 road (trains generally leave platform 2 and turn left onto that siding which is connected to both the westbound main, the bay road and all five sidings - this is 21 road), however it is possible to tip out at South Woodford eastbound and run straight into the sidings by taking the very first right and then another right into 21 road and straight into the sidings from there. Where trains are timetabled to run into the sidings from South Woodford, they usually run empty all the way from Leytonstone; this is common on a Sunday I believe. However, when the service is up the wall, South Woodford is a viable option. Terminate at South Woodford then empty to the sidings. This can be used to get trains out of the way and reduce congestion on the line and/or if a driver is reaching the end of their hours and they need to be relieved soon, but there's nobody to take the train over. Into Woodford sidings it is.

Yes, tut has pretty well summed it up. You do see them from time to time.
