Hope he wasn't tempted to try it underground, though!

I remember a chap doing this on the Glasgow underground, I can't for the life of me remember which stations it was though.

Hope he wasn't tempted to try it underground, though! Jimmy Nail did it in Newcastle!

I'd like to see him try that from Mile End to Stratford! Might've been a close race today with the problems at Bethnal Green (plus I think everything was all out of whack anyway 'cause of the late running engineering works)

I'm sorry to say I laughed when he was stopped by the stairs - I know its wrong but even so...
I'd like to see somebody race a train from Terminal 5 to Cockfosters - that ought to be a good challenge!

I'd like to see somebody race a train from Terminal 5 to Cockfosters - that ought to be a good challenge! According to Google Maps, the walking route between street level at Cockfosters and the entrance to T5 terminal building is 22.7 miles (23.6 when tweaked to avoid places it has got pedestrian access wrong that I know about) this would need to be done by a marathon runner. While this distance is less than a marathon, it does include features that would never be found on a marathon course, such as steps to bridges and subways and the need to wait for traffic while crossing roads. The men's marathon world record is currently 2 hours 3 minutes and 23 seconds. The journeyplanner says T5 to Cockfosters takes 1 hour 38 minutes. Even if you organised it so that no waiting was needed at road crossings, and you could run on the road at places like Apex Corner to avoid the need to use subways, it would not be possible. Uxbridge to Cockfosters is also timed at 1 hour 38 minutes by tube, but is only 18.2 miles walking distance by road according to Google. With the same caveats, this might be possible. Not for me though.

So this opens up an interesting question.. 1) Is there a distance between 2 stations in London nominally on the same route that would be roughly equivalaent to a distance events offical distances? 2) Over that distance, how does a typical athletic timing (average here not elite) , compare to the official train timing?

What about west ruislip to Epping? Even though the train goes through central London, running across north London probably won't be that easy! But might this be a contender?

The fastest marathon runners ran the 2014 London marathon at around 12-13 mph. West Ruislip to Epping by tube is around 46 miles and from point to point by road and a few footpaths is around 29 miles. By tube the journey is 1 hour 24 minutes so even by elitist they would not get there in time. (The fastest finishing time on the 26 mile London Marathon was just over 2 hours 4 minutes)
So to answer your question, no!

Hmmm, a shorter distance. Waterloo to Bank. I've compared the distances and both road and rail distances come to roughly the same at 1.5 miles. Whilst a normal marathon runner at 6mph could not do it as a second train will have been and gone, an elite could just about do it although it would be extremely tight meeting the same train. A W&C train takes 4-5 mins.

A W&C train takes 4-5 mins. Because of the time spent in the turnback siding at Waterloo you might be able to get off the train at one end and rejoin the same train at the other, especially off peak when they sit in Bank for a while as well. Remember though that you have to get into or out of the depths of Waterloo, and run the length of the Travelator
