Recently I have noticed that a couple drivers on the Bakerloo line are wearing ear protectors. Were complaints made to the management about the screeching of the wheel flanges causing damage to hearing? I am assuming that's what's prompted the use of ear protectors.

Are these Ear Protectors little in-ear foam ones, or are they the huge on-ear ones? I would hope that they don't cancel out the noise of any alarms or radios in the cab! I suspect that more likely it is a case of some management people going around with a sound monitor, deeming that it is unsafe for drivers to be exposed to these high levels of noise for prolonged periods on a daily basis, and so EDs are starting to be issued. Army Bands for example have now been issued with in-ear foam protectors for a while now because of the prolonged noise levels

You do see this around occasionally, I've seen it on the Central a few times (it's gotta be said, it is so noisy between Redbridge and Gants Hill, it's very unpleasant). I always wondered whether it was doctor's orders or something, I think it's probably quite a good idea for your hearing, but I would imagine it would make it very difficult to hear things over the radio. That said, apparently it's not a big issue. This thread here from a while back is very good and it does suggest that the problem is quite bad on the Bakerloo. As you can read over there, LU actually offer (or, at least, offered) ear plugs, as well as their own ear defenders. What I always thought would be a good idea is noise-cancelling headphones which could be plugged in to the train radio so that messages played through them.

Would they be Plugs or Headset type of defenders?

Would they be Plugs or Headset type of defenders? I've certainly seen the headset type about, but not very often. I gather plugs are definitely worn, but you can't really tell they're being worn from the platform!

I always wear earplugs on the tube due to the environment. It's more than the screeching on curves, it's also the motor sound of older trains.

...it's also the motor sound of older trains. But that's half the fun!!!!! Be glad you don't live in the land of the Pacer; no bogies (just an axle at each carriage-end) means pretty much any trip on one is an aural assault.

But that's half the fun!!!!! I have to admit, I usually have to cover my ears around Redbridge Otherwise, I see what you mean. The air down there is truly filthy as well - and it stinks around Bank on the Central line (never been able to work out what that smell is, there's a similar one at Holborn) - but, ahhhh, it's a labour of love, I can't stay away.

It's the headset style ones, imagine that you'd have to have some kind of in-headset radio/alarm feed.

I do! I love the ruddy things more then I love my own family actually... They used to do Hull - York but they got displaced by 156 and 158 units - though sometimes spotted on the early runs from time to time. However, the early morning Hull - Sheffield runs are often Pacers throughout the whole thing which suits me very well in winter when the heating is switched off and I claim the seats nearest the leading doors

Some have been wearing protectors for sometime. The problem seems to have got worse as the track gets replaced. Since that was taken it doesn't seem as bad at Waterloo. Whether that's because the track has worn in or they greasers I don't know.
Video of it here

I once saw a photograph of a Central line train at East Acton captioned with: 'Hung over? Let me sing the song of my people'

I personally find the hum of the LT115Bs to be much softer on the ears compared with whatever they stuck under the S stock!! ?

OK metman, I'll do a deal. Send us the S-Stock, get Viva rail to put transit van engines underneath each car - and we'll send you a four Pacers in exchange. Stick a wire coat-hanger on the end of the axle and it will power the iPod and iPod dock that will broadcast the appropriate note (I believe it was G) to make it sound right. And gods help you when you cross the points at Neasden; you thought A Stock were "fun"! I had travelled by Pacer today, three seats had shaken themselves free.

The Tube can be very noisy! I can understand very well why drivers wear ear protection.
