I thought I'd share THIS interesting article, which I've discovered on the Guardian news website just now. It seems that their Metro system is already larger than our Underground and is set to double in size again.... and a 20p ticket will take you 55 miles.

Blimey-that is indeed a metro! Cheap, too, and er cheerful?
And I can't see anyway they can abate the exponential expansion they're going to need, unlike their attempts to limit population.
Wonder if there is ever a noticeable off-peak service anywhere on it; or would that just constitute the station staff pushing a little less harder?

And I used to think the Bakerloo southbound was overcrowded in the '70s...

One thing the article doesn't mention is that the speed of construction and opening of new lines is causing problems with later reliability. Some lines have been built too quickly with corners being cut and inadequate testing meaning that asset performance and reliability is not what it should be. One of the lines affected is Line 4 which HK MTR are involved with. I don't think they're very happy about the scale of problems - one recent peak incident saw two complete lines just stop working at the height of the peak. IIRC I read about this in the South China Morning Post (a HK based newspaper) - article Note there is a limit of 8 free articles per month before some form of registration/subscription is required. The Guardian article does suggest that off peak travel is much less stressed with trains not being so crowded.
