I notice that there are two stopping boards at Northwood northbound, the second of which is under the bridge and says, I think, S|R. Does anybody know what this is for?

It's a reversing mark for S stock. Another example is platform 5 at Harrow-on-the-Hill, which has an S|S mark for the regular stopping place, and then an S|R mark a little further in for trains reversing into the siding. I presume that this is because the longer S stock need to pull forward to clear either the points or the track circuit to allow the route to be set for the siding.

I see. Thanks very much I had suspected it could be something like that, it just didn't strike me that Northwood NB was a particularly short platform. Thanks for the clarification

I believe that this is actually because of signal sighting issues with the wrong-road starters, as opposed to releasing the track circuit. I'm certain that both at Northwood NB and Harrow P5 SB a train fully berthed at the S|S stopping mark occupies the track circuit only.
