Not too long ago, I was on a Jubilee line train between West Ham and Stratford, which stopped at the Stratford staff halt. I was wondering - how is the staff halt used and how is it managed by TBTC?

The halt is treated as a station in the timetable but all trains are set to skip stop by default. To get a train to stop either the trip is edited, by staff at the control centre, to remove the skip (takes a few seconds) or the train is run in Protected Manual and stopped in the right location by the train op.

Thanks And how is the message that somebody would like to use the halt and the train needs to stop communicated? Is there a plunger or something on the halt itself, or do you phone ahead?

If someone wants to get picked up at the Halt they would telephone or radio the signalman and ask for a train to stop. The signalman can then automatically put a "Stop" into the system (the driver gets a "Pick Up at the Staff Halt" message on the TOD (Train Operators Display). The train op can work the train in Auto to the Halt where it will stop automatically or he/she can put the train into Protected Manual and manually driver the train to the Halt.
If dropping off at the Halt from West Ham most drivers will drive in manual to the Halt rather than ask the signalman to stop the train automatically although they could do so if they wanted to.

Thank you In the case I witnessed it just so happened to be a pick-up.
