The Standard has a report of a Moscow metro train derailment which if the report is accurate seems something the Railway Inspectorate may need to keep tabs on. Standard article hereSadly the accident has claimed lives and left others injured. The worrying aspect of the article is the derailment being attributed to a "power surge". OK I can understand an over voltage incident might cause systems to "fail safe" - so possibly leaving a train(s) stranded, but how would that cause it to derail? I can only think the excess volts had some unexpected impact on points. <<Rincew1nd: Thread title tidied a little>>

Looks to me like the derailment was caused by the application of the emergency brakes, presumably in only the leading cars causing some of the trailing cars to ride up and off.

Chris is bang on here. His eloquent thoughts are really the only things that are important at the moment. Speculation as to the cause is sadly inevitable but it's better to wait until those who actually know, and have the evidence, submit their report. Indeed, if this had happened on the London system I believe forum rules would prevent discussion of it, just as they do with much less serious incidents.

Indeed, if this had happened on the London system I believe forum rules would prevent discussion of it, just as they do with much less serious incidents. Posting thoughts/condolences regarding an incident would never be prevented on the forum... its posting speculation/guesstimation that is the danger. I've heard various comments as to a possible cause on media channels today, but not being familiar with the Moscow Underground/Metro network, let alone how it works, it’s not for me to guesstimate what might have happened. Remember the events of 7 July 2005, were initially attributed to a power surge. The forum staff would rather speculation be left to others, who may be right or wrong. All we can do (as a forum/community) is watch with sadness from afar, thinking of those that are no longer with us, or caring for their injured loved ones. With this in mind, as a District Dave Forum Administrator, I'd like to pass on the condolences and thoughts of the staff and membership of the forum to the Moscow Metro Railway staff, the passengers, their families and Moscow Emergency Services who had to deal with the sad events of today.

Well said Chris. These things are never easy, and thoughts should be with the victims and their families.

There is a photo on the BBC news page showing the carnage within the tunnel. It sadly brings back memories of Moorgate. RIP to all who died.

Thank you... The most probable cause of disaster, as Investigative Committee of Russia stated, is as follows: a newly installed point was not properly fixed, causing train to turn to the right at full speed and crash into the dividing wall.
