I was wondering the other day about tube drivers that fast for the month during Ramadan. Does LU have rules about fasting for drivers; fasting for 18 hours per day is a long time not to eat if you have safety critical work? I have a lot of respect for my colleagues in the NHS who seem to function very well having not eaten for hours and are still rushed off their feet!

This is a really interesting point. I've a friend who's doing Ramadan at the moment and it's really harsh, especially at this time of year. The not eating bit during daylight hours isn't so bad (he's normally at Regent's Park mosque by 3:30am) but it's the water that would be a killer - though I did ask about showers and things, which is apparently fine. I think it's probably surprising what the body can cope without, most of it is a mental thing - as they say in Bikram yoga, the body is strong but the mind is weak. While not directly on topic, this is an interesting article: www.theguardian.com/theguardian/2014/jul/11/ramadan-spiritual-fast-faithful-community-take-stock

Interesting. I guess that airline pilots etc arent exempt from fasting so tube drivers wouldnt be any different.
But it must affect your concentration?
The power of 'mind over matter' is amazing.

They do try and be flexible as possible with swapping shifts etc but the business needs always comes first. We have staff who do normally day shifts change to nights over the Ramadan period, but that does not suit all grades of LU staff for obivous reasons.

What an interesting thread. One of my colleagues at Royal Mail used to find it quite tough to observe Ramadan, but he always managed it. A while back, there was an episode of Traffic Cops where one of the Thames Valley PCs was observing Ramadan, and started to feel sick when chasing a miscreant.
Must admit that I admire their willpower to do it.
