When the Jubilee line opened in 1979 it was operated by 1972 mk 2 stock. However, I have seen a picture of a 1959 stock train at West Hampstead showing Charing Cross as it's destination. The picture is undated. Can anybody shed any light? I consider myself to be quite knowledgeable when it comes to the Underground, but I genuinely wasn't aware that 59 stock ever ran on the Jubilee. The train was in passenger service.

It did indeed run to Charing Cross. Not only as a test train (which was a 1962) but on a Sunday. I'll go have a dig .....

The question is why were the 59's used on the Jubilee?

Could the photo be taken at the time of the Bakerloo / Jubilee seperation? From memory I do not recall 59 Stock running on the Jubilee and note the temporary Stanmore plate displayed. I thought that it was a 72 mkII and 38 Stock mix at the time of the seperation, the 59 Stock transferring to the Bakerloo Line afterwards.

You are correct in that at the time of the Bakerloo split, it was a mix of 38's and 72's. 59 stock did not enter service on the Bakerloo until 1983, by which time the Stanmore branch was firmly a part of the Jubilee line.

I believe this was due to engineering works. I'm sure I saw a photo of a 1959 stock train at Baker Street too once.

1986 might have been at the time when 1983TS first batch were in severe trouble with bogie cracks and a major repair/mod programme. Perhaps the 59TS was temporarily covering for that.

When the Jubilee first opened,if there was major disruption on the Bakerloo they sometimes stabled Bakerloos at Neasden as an emergency measure.

Whatever the answer a most interesting photo. In fact two 59 Stock trains are seen so engineering works is probably the most likely answer. Someone had time to make up that Stanmore destination board so all must have been planned.
