There is an update on the Overground 5 car project and the procurement of new trains for West Anglia / GOBLIN in the papers for next week's Rail and Underground Panel Meeting. linkThe paper lists the 6 possible suppliers for the new West Anglia / GOBLIN rolling stock in terms of who responded to the pre-qualification request. TfL are due to shortlist prospective bidders shortly. The potential suppliers are :- (a) Bombardier Transportation; (b) CAF; (c) Hyundai Rotem Company; (d) Siemens Mobility Rolling Stock; (e) Hitachi Rail Europe; and (f) Stadler Bussnang AG An interesting mix and no Alstom.

It's hard to see past Bombardier given that they built the LO Class 378s and will build the Crossrail Class 345s. Stadler have no track record in the UK, outwith a few Croydon trams, ditto Rotem, although their IC DMUs for Iarnrod Eireann are a perfectly good and reliable product. I don't think Alstom have ever recovered from the reliability problems surrounding the Class 458 Juniper introduction in the late 1990s. If only they had sold a total traincare package to the ROSCO/SWT á la Siemens, the UK railway scene could now look a whole lot different. All idle speculation of course.

Might Bombardier be too overstretched though with those other projects? I have to admit I don't know too much about the manufacturing side of things but can their facilities cope with everything and do they have enough trained staff? Or is it easy enough to recruit people over? It seems that a lot of specialist engineers and technicians expect location change to be part of the job.

If the first of the new LO/WA stock due Q2/Q3 2017, what do Bombardier have on at the moment?
S stock Production started, due to finish ... ? 377/7 Production finished? 378 Extra car, due to finish by December 2015 387 Production started, due to finish when? 345 Production not yet started?
Hmm, given the London bias to their production, maybe they should move down south? ;-)

Taking that in order:
S Stock is due to be completed by end of 2015 377/7 by the end of 2014 378 extra cars by mid 2015 387 by early-mid 2015, however that might change if DfT take up the optional 34 extra units 345 is due to start production mid 2015 and complete by end of 2017 or early 2018 but remember there are 18 optional extra units.
Bombardier I think can run 4 or 5 production lines simultaneously.

So, to answer Latecomer's question, they'll probably not be overstretched with an order for LO/WA come 2017 when it's required then - unless they get the orders for TSGN 313 and 442 replacement fleets and C2C's extra stock.....

I suspect that the 'new' Gatwick express stock will be 387s (with a modified interior) - they need 27 units and in the peaks they will continue to go to Brighton. As for Moorgate - how about taking advantage of the Siemens production line and ask them to churn out a batch of 6 car long class 700 trains.

Unfortunately, if siemens don't put in a bid for the moorgate contract, TSGN can't take force them to make some more desiros. Siemens pulled out of crossrail because their production lines would be full. I suspect that the new GatEx stock would end up being an option from the 387s, or possibly some 377s that are displaced by introducing some 387s elsewhere (but that's more unlikely)
As for the moorgate stock, I think it'd be quite nice to have one of the underdogs come through, be it Hitachi, CÁF or even Stadler. Whether or not we actually get that, goodness only knows
