As I'm sure most people know, every summer Southfields gets glammed up for the tennis. This year it is a champagne company sponsoring it, and before now, its been FedEx. Not only this, but the platforms beyond the canopy get a carpet of fake grass installed. What I want to know is when this tradition began, and when did they start doing fake grass, I think its been within the past couple of years, as I can't remember it being there in 2009

I ought to be able to remember further back than 2009...but the memory fades. It all started at some point during the 24 years I have been living in Southfields, that's for sure...I do know that the sponsor in 2009 was HSBC and I'm pretty certain that the fake grass element pre-dates 2009 by some years.

The earliest record that I have of this happening is from 1997. I'm fairly certain that it began after ownership of the station transferred to LUL (which was in 1994).

The last time I was there was in 2007 - that was the year they grassed Trafalgar Square (and very nice it looked too) - but I don't recall seeing any grass or other glamming-up at Southfields. Having said that, I've never seen Southfields *except* during Wimbledon fortnight, so maybe it looks worse the rest of the time!
