Does anyone know what was wrong with the Central line during the evening peak? There were a number of missing trains, out of order running and bunching, with trains being held in platforms from time to time.
It was compounded by a defective train, which caused a 12 min gap in the eastbound service around 6pm, but this happened after the things I mentioned above. The platform at Bank was, in my opinion, severely overcrowded with people queuing in the passageways leading from the stairs to the Northern line.
And yes, you guessed it, this all took place with the good service messages being played. There wasn't even an announcement explaining why there was such a long delay. Don't Wood Lane have the ability to make announcements to the stations any more, or do they not bother, or do they think such a service is acceptable, thus not seeing the need for an announcement?
However, the inaction of the staff at Bank in terms of a lack of announcements about the delay and their failure to stop passengers from entering the platform also leaves a lot to be desired.

Looking back, it seems 14 east-end Train Operators were unavailabe for late shift that afternoon/evening, this caused delays and extended intervals. Then 3 defective trains between 1400-1745, all requiring working empty to depot, caused these intervals to increase.
Indeed at Bank, after the last passenger train to Newbury Pk at 1756, the next passenger train EB was 1810 to Debden, 1812 Epping.

I got off at White City EB for my meal relief around 6pm and there hadn't been any announcements from Wood Lane about delays, if they don't tell us there's a problem we (or the stations) can't pass on the information. If whoever is in the station control room isn't keeping an eye on train movements they're only going to realise there's something wrong when they notice the platforms getting crowded.
Hainault depot has got serious shortages at the moment, apparently I was one of the few TOps finishing on the east end of the line last night that had someone waiting to relieve them. Some of my colleagues had to tip out their trains then take them empty to the nearest available siding or depot at the end of their shifts, after Woodford was full they were having to go to Hainault or Loughton. Even though we get paid overtime not many people are happy with doing a 7-8 hour shift then having to work an extra hour on a Saturday night.

Thanks Aslefshrugged for your input from a T/OP perspective. It wouldn't be the first time that Wood Lane haven't been very good at dealing with things. Surely somebody there was able to see what was going on, then make announcements to the central area stations regarding the delay. Is it Wood Lane's job to advise network control that the service is no longer "good"? Personally, I thought the situation at Bsnk was bordering on dangerous, since when the train arrived after the 14 min gap in service, the platform was so jammed that passengers were having difficulty getting off the train because there was no space.
I don't often complain to TFL, but I feel that this situation warrants it. I will keep you posted as to any reply that I receive.
