Hi, I was wondering if there was any difference between the red whistle boards and the blue ones and, obviously, if so - what is it?
I was also wondering if you always have to whistle, or whether you're allowed not to in certain situations - are there any rules/guidelines on this point. The only reason I ask is that I often notice (particularly on the Central line, which just happens to be my line, but is also ATO, which may have something to do with it?) trains not whistling as they go past. Of course, I could easily just be missing it, the whistle can be quite quiet from the saloon, but you can usually hear it and this isn't a one off. Of course, as I say, I may be mistaken, I was just wondering if this is the way it's meant to be or a bit naughty?
On the subject of whistling in general, I was wondering when you're supposed to whistle? For example, I sometimes hear a whistle when coming out of the pipe approaching Leyton on the east, say, or just outside Leytonstone on the westbound/outer rail. I remember reading (but can't recall the particulars) about there being areas where nobody is supposed to be and areas where people are allowed and I remember something to do with you being supposed to whistle when coming out of the tunnel into the latter but not the former. But it seems that occasionally trains whistle when leaving tunnels where they don't normally. I was just wondering if there were any rules/regs on this or is it just discretionary? Similarly, occasionally a train will whistle when heading into the siding at Woodford but more often than not you won't hear anything.

If you see anyone in high vis, you should whistle to ensure they are aware of the train, and they will raise a hand to say they are in a safe location and are aware that that train is there.
I think I have seen black, red and blue whistle boards (pic line) but can't say the meaning. (I am not so sure on seeing a black one)

There are no differences between red and blue whistle boards. they will all be blue eventually. They are only operational from 7am - 7pm though. Drivers on the central line blow the whistle when coming out of the tunnels at Leyton EB and Leytonstone WB as there maybe staff on or about the track. The drivers cant see so they whistle as a precaution to warn staff there is a train approaching. Also approaching White City WB as well.

I believe it is also in the central line drivers handbook.

It's in the Rule book, and elsewhere as said. When I learnt it (70s)it was in section 11 of the appendix to the Rule book. There was a whole range of codes using long or short whistles, e.g. four long to call a car examiner. Trains were required to whistle leaving the mouth of a tube tunnel (to warn track workers), and when approaching a platform at which the train would not stop (alerts passengers and track workers beyond). There were no time limits set other than "motor men should not make more frequent use of the whistle than is absolutely necessary for safe and efficient working in compliance with the rules and regulations" so as to "avoid annoyance to residents in the neighbourhood of the railway". Someone with current knowledge may know the current details, but I'm sure the basic tenets still apply.

Exactly neilw Current Rule Book 6 states: Sounding the whistle, you must sound the train whistle at whistle boards only between 07:00 and 19:00 hours. Pop whistles, You must sound a series of pop whistles when: • moving a train in the wrong direction • entering a station when the traction current has been switched off • approaching a blind spot when the traction current has been switched off. You must use the following whistle codes: • When starting a train (in depot) 1 short. • When changing speed (when assisting with engineering work) 1 short. • When acknowledging a handsignal 1 short. • When acknowledging a train maintainer’s call up signal 1 short. • To acknowledge satisfactory completion of brake test 2 short. • When shunting from sidings to main line 2 short (pause) 2 short. • When you require an assisting train operator to rejoin the train 3 short. • If your train is being assisted by another train and you require to stop 3 or more short. • Before passing a stop signal at danger 1 long. • When approaching a platform at which a train will not stop (also applies to empty trains in booked workings and trains proceeding to and from depots) 1 long. • When approaching a whistle board 1 long. • To warn persons on the track 1 long. • To call attention to the train 1 long. • Leaving the mouth of a tube tunnel (not applicable NR lines) 1 long. • To call the attention of station staff 1 long. • When you require an assisting train operator to apply brakes or test air brake 2 long (pause) 1 short. • When you require a train technician 4 long.

Current Rule Book 6 states: You must use the following whistle codes: • When starting a train (in depot) 1 short..Ahhh, this now explains why I always thought W&C Line trains sound the whistle before moving off but not other lines; thinking back the only time I've seen a train move off without being on it is at Waterloo either entering of leaving the depot.

I have had a couple of t/ops whistle an acknowledgment to my 8yr old granddaughter when she waves at them at Debden whilst we are waiting for a train. Most wave back, but she thinks it's great when they whistle.

There is something magic about waving at trains, even more so when someone waves back. In March on my #grandUKtour there was a small boy waving at my train on Crewe platform, his face positively lit up when I waved back! I blame The Railway Children.
Anyway, I digress.

There's a pedestrian bridge on the approach to Oakwood and I always give a wave and a whistle to any kids that are waiting. Sometimes however I can't tell if it's the kids who are more excited, or the parents

Its a shame that due to a small minority, all the bridges are covered over now. The Oakwood bridge in particular was quite popular to chuck things off of. I remember once an on coming 73 stock was greeted by a washing machine heading towards it!!
