I was surprised to find the Circle running between Edgware Road and Gloucester Road on Sunday, with trains reversing in Gloucester Road Platform 3 (which was also being served by the eastbound District line trains; the westbounds were using Platform 2, with Platform 1 out of use!). The return to High Street Kensington was via a very noisy crossover. Is this kind of set-up frequently used during engineering works? I seem to recall having to change at Earls Court in the past.

The crossover (205a/205b) is used by a Circle Line train every Mon-Sat, from pfm.3 at Gloucester Road-Edgware Road. It was last used for engineering work on 14/15 September 2013 but in the other direction, so didn't carry passengers. It was used in the same way as this current weekend, on Easter Monday 1 April 2013.

I went down there as well and I've got to say I enjoyed myself, it certainly made a nice change. The crossover, as you say, though, does not offer the smoothest ride on the network.
I imagine it was used because of the limited capacity for reversing at Embankment, so no real hope of sending Circle trains that far and maintaining any kind of service on the west end of the District. I believe High Street was also used for reversing District trains, presumably to keep up a good service to Ealing and Richmond (hence, I imagine, no Olympia shuttle). I suppose South Ken could've been used instead, but reversing east to west (/inner rail to outer rail) at South Ken can't be done in passenger service, so Gloucester Road makes a lot of sense.
Some inevitable confusion was occasioned of course, especially as the nippy turnarounds seemed to leave a few people too little time to work out which train was which!

...as the nippy turnarounds seemed to leave a few people too little time to work out which train was which! As one announcement had it: "This is a Circle Line train to Edgware Road...let's go!" Both bays at High Street Kensington were being used to reverse D-stocks, and there were a lot of them!

Now you see what we've done there is essentially complained about the tube being too smooth and efficient. You really can't do right for doing wrong can you

The crossover has stainless steel stripes welded to the top of the rails due to the infrequent use of the crossover to keep the track circuits shunting performance within the desired limits.
The District's going via the Circle platform was a error on the programme machine roll at South Kensington with it being punched wrong.
